In 2004, the port of Amsterdam was extended by 26 hectares. This extension underlines an activity on the increase with a traffic of 73 million tonnes of goods and 18.8 million Euros revenue (for 7.7 million in 2003). The region and the city benefit from the port activity with over 37 000 direct jobs (60 000 indirect) and an added value estimated at 2.87 billion euros.
