Sydney Ports Corporation CEO Greg Martin said the Environmental Assessment has been lodged with the Department of Planning and will be on public exhibition till 20 February 2006. “There has been a lot of incorrect information circulating in the community and I urge people to go to an exhibition location to learn the facts,” said Mr Martin.
Mr Martin said despite truck traffic representing less than 1% of forecast total traffic on arterial roads surrounding the ILC, Sydney Ports Corporation has been working with traffic modelling experts to design the best possible system. “We want to assure everyone that we are determined to ensure that trucks do not queue or rat run on residential streets. We will funnel trucks directly onto arterial roads and the site will have traffic management measures in place.” “In terms of trains, Enfield currently is linked to an active freight rail line. The proposal is about making better use of the rail link and thereby helping to reduce the growth in truck numbers across Sydney by up to 300 trucks per day between Port Botany and Enfield. The ILC will be served by 8-10 trains a day, moving between the site and Port Botany.
“The ILC has been carefully designed to minimise the noise impacts on our neighbours. “The main operational areas are based away from neighbours and are buffered by buildings, noise walls and a landscaped, 1.35km long noise mound. We will also include rigorous operational measures such as the use of noise-modified equipment where possible. “Also we are making a $2.8 million investment in a 6 hectare area that is currently a terrible eyesore. It will become a green space that will be a valuable community asset. This will include a special area specifically set aside for local fauna including foraging habitat suitable for the green and golden bell frog.
“We are also keen to hear ideas for uses of the tarpaulin shed. This neglected area will be committed for use as a community space.
Sydney Ports Corporation is confident that the potential impacts of the proposed development can be appropriately addressed and mitigated. We will work actively with our neighbours to address local concerns.
