Hong Kong, Pusan and Kaohsiung have long dominated the container sector in East Asia. The gradual shift in the centre of gravity of economic growth and international trade from Japan to China during the 1990s has led to the emergence of major new ports such as Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as Kwangyang, Qingdao, and Ningbo. In the future maritime operators will focus their service offerings on locations in China as they rationalise their Japanese destinations. This will mean intense competition between container ports in the region, but may also encourage the adoption of cooperative strategies and a redefinition of their hinterlands.
