In February 2000, the Hamburg Senate approved the master-plan that initiated the urban development project "HafenCity". 155 hectares are now concerned by this programme that plans for a blend mixing residential and shopping zones, cultural and leisure spaces. According to the initiators, HafenCity today constitutes one of the biggest urban projects in Europe.

Pour assurer un développement cohérent du projet, l'Etat d'Hambourg a constitué une société, dont il demeure propriétaire : HafenCity Hambourg GmbH. Alors que le projet est en plein essor, celle-ci vient de publier un document détaillé (mars 2006) faisant le point sur les réalisations abouties depuis février 2000 et sur les projets en cours.
