Elle a notamment remarqué ses initiatives pour la réduction de la vitesse des navires, la modernisation des accès routiers et de la flotte des poids lourds et les programmes de gestion des marinas. L'EPA a choisit de récompenser le port (18/04/2006).This award comes two weeks after the Port was awarded the 2005 Clean Air Excellence Award from the EPA in Washington, D.C. The Port won the award for its Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) program, which significantly cuts air emissions by turning off diesel-burning container ship engines while at dock and plugging them into clean electrical power instead.
“To receive this recognition from our local district EPA office is very gratifying,” said Geraldine Knatz, the Port’s executive director. “We are extremely proud of our broad-based platform of environmental programs. We are setting the bar high for ourselves and the entire industry, and we thank the EPA for recognizing our hard work.”
The Port is one of 38 winners selected from more than 160 entries in the California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and Pacific Islands region. The award recognizes those working throughout the western United States to protect and preserve the environment.
