Cette démarche conforte la création récente d'un Comité pour l'environnement. Celui-ci, constitué d'universitaires, d'avocats de représentants d'agences gouvernementales et d'acteurs portuaires, est chargé de gérer la conduite des projets mais également de formuler des propositions au conseil d'administration du port et aux partenaires locaux.“Environmental protection of the Bay’s resources and the waterfront is one of the most important actions the Port can take for the benefit of all of its five member cities and the entire region,” said Robert J. (Rocky) Spane, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners and founder and Chairman of the Environmental Committee.
The $5 million will serve as “seed money” for projects initiated through the Environmental Committee. For continued funding, the Board of Port Commissioners on June 6th voted to annually contribute . of 1 percent of the Port District’s projected gross revenues into a Port Environmental Fund. For fiscal year 2006/2007 the amount is approximately $600,000.
The Port’s Environmental Committee will assist in evaluating, prioritizing and implementing programs to ensure environmental protection and improvement of the Bay and tidelands. The committee, which has met three times, will keep the Port apprised on new or emerging approaches to environmental issues, including those for remediation of contamination, enhancement of habitat for native fish and wildlife, increasing native fish and wildlife populations, controlling and eliminating pollutant discharges, and eliminating air emissions. The committee will also select projects for recommendation to the Board of Port Commissioners for funding by the Port Environmental Fund.
The $5 million stems from proceeds the Port recovered due to the results of litigation
and insurance settlements related to environmental issues.
