Hamburg, over the years has regained a choice place in the North European port complex. The opening-up of the economies of Eastern Europe and the growth of Chinese trade have pushed Hamburg forwards more than any other European port since the start of this decade. Now the third continental port, Hamburg also represents one of the major cities for international shipping with its shipping lines and financial institutions. Thus Hamburg has succeeded in preserving the two pillars of its identity and of its economy, a port with a continental influence and a business market on a world-wide scale.
