From 7 to 31 March 2007, City Cargo Amsterdam has been undertaking a pilot operation aiming at reducing congestion on the main roads leading to the city by transporting containers on the tramways. According to the company, this mode of transport could reduce air pollution by 15 to 20%. If the operation proves conclusive, about fifty trams could be in circulation by 2008 to connect with the distribution platforms in the suburbs, relayed by electric vehicles (E-cars) charged with taking the goods to their final destination in mini-containers.
