Noting the central role of containerisation in globalisation, this study shows the developments and new tendencies. The analysis bears notably on the running of a data base on the weekly capacities of containerised transport. It thus appears that innovation by the maritime networks is a key element in the competitiveness of the big global shipping companies. Since the Eighties, the East Asian shipping companies have dominated international trade. But, several European shipping companies, by the configuration of their maritime networks are putting this hegemony into question.
