The agreement that has just been signed by the City of Auckland, Auckland Regional Holdings (ARH) and Ports of Auckland Ltd (POAL) will enable the revitalisation operation for the waterfront, from Harbour Bridge to the West to Teal Park to the East, to be launched. The project, made possible by the prior sale of several land-sites to the city, also brings to a conclusion the public consultation started in 2005. (29/06/2007)

The centrepiece of the waterfront makeover is ARH’s Sea+City Project, a rejuvenation of the Tank Farm area within Wynyard Quarter, into a lively, mixed-use urban village with new green parks, plazas, boulevards, shops, apartments and restaurants, alongside the marine and fishing industries.
ARH is a statutory investment management entity and owner of the 18.5 ha former Ports of Auckland land within Wynyard Quarter and is the investor and sponsor of the Sea+City Project. Its wholly-owned subsidiary company, Sea+City Projects Limited is charged with overseeing the revitalisation of the Sea+City Project area.
A feature of the Sea+City Project is a 4.25 hectare headland public space overlooking the harbour to be jointly owned and managed by Auckland City and the Auckland Regional Council. This public space will also provide a site for an iconic building.
The new plan for the area has been developed taking into account feedback from public and key stakeholder consultation on the earlier design concept put forward in 20005 which sees:

- a trebling of the size of the headland public space on Wynyard Point
- an increase of 40 per cent in area for the marine industry, and
- the provision of 2.4 kms of public access to the waterfront.

The Agreement delivers on the principles established in the Auckland Waterfront Vision 2040 by Auckland City Council and Auckland Regional Council, along with Ports of Auckland Ltd, which included extensive public input and consultation. A major principle of the Waterfront Vision 2040 was to improve public access to the water’s edge, while retaining the historic character of areas associated with the fishing and marine industries.
