In 2003 Angola undertook a programme for the redevelopment of the waterfront of Luanda with the announced objective of giving a new economic vitality to the port city. A first phase of works was carried out between 2005 and 2007 to provide the city with international class hotel accommodation and shopping centre. As from 2008, 2 billion dollars of private investments, spread over 15 years, will complete the project. At the same time the merchant port of Luanda has announced a modernisation programme that will lead it to invest 150 million dollars by 2010 to improve its infrastructures, and provide security and to train its personnel.
