The port of La Rochelle will change its status as from 1st January 2006 to become an autonomous port.

The decree creating the Port Autonome de La Rochelle was published in the Journal Officiel of the French Republic of the 21st December 2004. With the implementation of the laws on decentralisation only the autonomous ports will continue to depend upon the State in metropolitan France. In a communiqué, the government also wants to underline "the economic and commercial importance gained by the commercial port of La Rochelle". It states that "this creation enables a convergence with the existing autonomous ports of Bordeaux and Nantes-Saint Nazaire on a more ambitious scale so as to produce a significant and coherent port facility on the European level on the Atlantic coast."
