Transports, logistics and especially port-connected activities are a major driver for Genoa and Liguria economy and occupation. The economic relevance of the port of Genoa goes well beyond the region’ boundaries: it’s a natural gateway for the Italian North-West intercontinental trade. The role of container throughput is growing more and more, but between 2003 and 2013 this development, such as the one of the whole Italian port system, was sensibly lower than those at Northern Range and at some West Med ports. This is partly due to the steadily weak Italian economic performance in the last ten years, but also to some weaknesses of the Italian supply-chain, related to the quality of the infrastructures and of some logistic services. This confirms that every step towards the improvement of logistic chain can contribute to the Country’s competitiveness.
After an Economic bachelor in business achieved in 1993 at the “Università Bocconi di Milano” (110L/110), Enrico Beretta has joined the Bank of Italy in Genoa at the beginning of 1995, where he started a work of territorial economic analysis and relations with local Agencies and companies.
He was then responsible of the Office “Analysis and territorial economic research” until 2013, when he entered the office of the General Management of the Bank of Italy in Genoa.
The territorial units of research of the Bank of Italy are continuously examining the evolution of the structural aspects and the economic conjuncture of the territory of reference, contributing to the central publications of the Bank and producing periodicals documents of local analysis. Moreover, they carry out more general research activity in collaboration with the central Service Studies of Rome and within research projects of national character. The thematic issues of which I have taken care more recently concern the subject of credit, the economy of the transports and the economy of the culture.
