Affluent Ventspils relies on its port and freezone to dominate Latvia’s economy

After the country joined the EU in 2002, the port lost 50% of its traffic owing to Russia’s decision to halt oil exports. However, the Mayor responded by creating a free zone and a vast infrastructure programme. Some fifteen years on, exports of industrial products have multiplied by 40 times! Training centres have been set up and the City is also focusing on immigration. In the international arena, Ventspils is now ranked among the most attractive cities for investors.
