The surroundings of the Port Center of Mainport Rotterdam (EIC) had been completey renewed during the last 1,5 years. It is part of a plan to have more green spots and nature in the port to ‘compensate’ the construction of Maasvlakte 2- de new port area, built in the Northsea.
The Port Center is situated in the new Calandpark in the heart of the port. The park is named after Pieter Caland who built the deep Waterway at the end of the 19th century. It connects the port directly with the North Sea (whithout locks, which is a great advantage).
Near the EIC Port Center, a nice open tower has been built from where young visitors of the EIC and other people have a wonderfull view on Rotterdam port activities, the waterways, oil storage tanks and chemical industries.
The official opening was surrounded with all kinds of festivities, singing, demonstrations of several sports and youthclubs, a mountainbike ralley , and workshop hiphop/streetdance.
Of course the Port Center itself was on this special open to all public (normally only groups of schoolchildren / students can visit the center).
