:Following the legislative decree n.169, 4th August 2016, the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority of Livorno and Piombino has been established, including also the port of Portoferraio, Rio Marina, Cavo and Capraia. Livorno is a multipurpose port, located on the west coast of Italy and is one of the top ports of call on a National basis, in terms of quantity of goods handled and in terms of passengers. Main Italian port for forest products, pulp paper in particular, and key port for new cars traffic, Livorno is also a top port for RORO traffic (Motorways of the Sea) and since the ‘80s is active as container port. It offers direct rail links with the national network and good road links to the main national and international destinations. Livorno was founded by the Medici family at the end of the Renaissance period to facilitate port’s development, giving rise to a cosmopolitan city, an emblematic example of the vitality of the Tuscan region. The bond between the port, the city and the surrounding area came to be in that period and still thrives today. One of the main tools to enhance this link is the Livorno Port Center, inaugurated on November 2015, in the core of the Old Fortress, which is also managed by the Port Authority. The port of Piombino has undergone continuous infrastructure development, seeing the port now equipped some ten times better than before, and today it offers the most ample and total range of operating structures for all types of traffic. The new Port Regulatory Plan foresees a notable increase in berths (the addition of around 3.5 kilometres in length), of wharfage areas (some one million square metres more than those currently available), dredging to a depth of twenty metres, and adequate direct road and rail links.
