:Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), is a statutory body under the Ministry of Transport, infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development. It was established by an Act of Parliament on 20th January 1978, with a mandate to maintain, operate, improve and regulate the Port of Mombasa, all scheduled seaports situated along Kenya’s coastline and inland waterways. The Authority is also responsible for the operation and management of Inland Container Depots in Nairobi and Kisumu and liaison offices in Kampala and Rwanda which cater for all transit countries i.e. Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, South Sudan and Ethiopia. The Mission of the Authority is to facilitate seaborne trade in the most efficient manner by progressively benchmarking its operational targets to internationally acceptable standards. The port had numerous key projects which most of them are already in operation while others are ongoing. The projects are: 1. Expansion of container terminal; (Phase 1 done) 2. Dredging of the Port; (Phase 1 done) 3. Equipment modernisation; (continuous) 4. Conversion of some conventional berths into container berths; (plans underway) 5. Development of Cruise Ship Terminal; (ongoing) 6. IT Project, Port Community based System; (continuous) 7. Security improvement project; (continuous) 8. Development of Free Port; (plans underway) 9. Development of a Second Commercial Seaport in Lamu.(ongoing) Notable achievement in the city-port domain have to be underlined: 1. Industrial Development; 2. Infrastructure; 3. Transport; 4. Commercial activities; 5. Corporate Social Responsibility.
