Death of Iñaki Azkuna, mayor of Bilbao and ex-President of AIVP
It is with the greatest sadness that AIVP reports the death of Iñaki Azkuna, Mayor of Bilbao, after a fight against illness which lasted for more than ten years. Iñaki Azkuna had been mayor of Bilbao for more than 14 years. He served as President of AIVP from 2005 to 2009; the city of Bilbao is a member of the association’s board of directors. Under his enlightened presidency, AIVP organised the 10th and 11th world port city conferences at Sydney (2006) and Stockholm (2008). Iñaki Azkuna, the mayor who presided over Bilbao’s urban renewal as a result of the “Guggenheim effect” and the spectacular transformation of port-city interfaces, was himself an active participant in the development of the international dynamic of AIVP’s world port city network in Spain and Latin America. Bilbao hosted several AIVP events, bearing witness to the high quality of the port city projects executed in the city.
The AIVP Board of Directors and the General Management team at Le Havre offer their deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues in the Bilbao city hall.
