Port of Oslo will develop a buffer zone in new district

In Oslo (Norway), Hav Eiendom has completed the initial stages of the zoning plan for the new district of Grønlikaia. To promote interdisciplinarity and increase the breadth of proposals, 16 teams were selected to work on five sub-areas of the new district, which will be opened in 2026. All of these sub-areas will be mixed-use spaces and aim to increase waterfront accessibility for the public with harbour promenades and public urban spaces. The fifth area will create a buffer zone between the city and the Port of Oslo’s operation in Sydhavna. It will include a recreational area and emphasis will be placed on nature restoration.

eThekwini Municipality (South Africa) is partnering with Transnet, and the Province to develop a new masterplan for the waterfront along Margaret Mncadi Avenue. The goal is to transform this area into a new tourism and economic hub, including new public spaces and key facilities such as a museum, an exhibition centre, science centre, retail mall, and an African cultural centre. The new plan, in a very early stage, will also include four- and five-star hotels, apartments and a marina. Besides transforming Durban’s waterfront into a world-class tourism destination, other objectives include the developing water sports, new green areas and positive linkages between the yacht basin and the inner city.

Seville: the city, port and university join forces for nuclear fusion research

A scientific and industrial community in Seville (Spain) has signed a wide-ranging deal to accelerate research into nuclear fusion technology. The consortium Fusion2Grid, which includes prestigious universities and R&D centres including Princeton (USA), General Atomics (USA), Culham Science Centre (UK) and EUROfusion (UE), has chosen the port of Seville to host its pilot project dubbed TOKAMAK Smart. The port zone, a logistics hub in the Andalusia region, will provide the site for an experiment to reach 100,000,000°C, the temperature at which fusion takes place. It would represent another step towards nuclear fusion, which would revolutionise efforts to decarbonise industry and logistics..
