COP29 pledge unites port actors to build climate resilience

During the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) held in Baku (Azerbaijan) from November 11th until 22nd, the Resilience4Ports initiative launched an action-based commitment to accelerate port resilience against climate change. The pledge is the first sectoral, action-based commitment from global port actors to address the resilience of infrastructure, operations and activities. It asks industry partners to: understand and manage climate risks; integrate climate resilience into business models and processes; foster community focused on business continuity; and share knowledge and experiences. The AIVP and AIVP members, ports of Baku and Bilbao (Spain), have been involved in the initiative. The Resilience4Ports initiative included Bilbao Port’s BilbOPS project in its progress report to showcase an example of increasing resilience of natural ecosystems and power generation.

The port of Brussels is developing a canalside economic hub

The port of Brussels (Belgium) is making a vast range of premises available to businesses in an ideal location along the canal and close to the city centre. The units, which could be used for offices or storage, vary in size from under 100 m² to over 10,000 m², making them suitable for the specific requirements of numerous different firms. They are strategically located for easier logistical and commercial links, creating a dynamic environment. The move will make the port a genuine economic hub, with modern infrastructures tailored to the challenges faced by businesses today.

Leveraging port land in Le Havre for sustainable industrialization

Haropa Port (France) has selected three industrial projects for its 60-hectare turnkey site dubbed “Ouest (West) 29-Le Havre”. The winners are international firms Livista Energy (Luxembourg) and Air Products (US), along with French company Q-Air. They will invest close to 2.6 billion euros in projects to drive the energy transition. By the end of 2029, the land is set be occupied by industrial facilities producing hydrogen, renewable methanol, and lithium. The reindustrialization process is part of the France 2030 strategy aimed at transforming port zones into sustainable industry hubs. The plan should eventually create more than 720 direct jobs locally.

San Francisco Bay ferries going electric

Like many ports in the United States, the port of San Franscico (USA) is set to benefit from the Environmental Protection Agency’s multi-billion dollar “Clean Port”  investment programme. The port will receive $55 million to scale up its electrification process, with the money being used to build an electric 400-passenger ship, a new terminal, and other electrification infrastructure. The new terminal will help to connect a new Bay Area neighbourhood to the transport network, while giving residents easier access to the waterfront. Orders will also be placed for a further three electric ferries, each capable of carrying 150 passengers.

Testing wind energy in the Port of Lisbon

The Port of Lisbon (Portugal) has installed the first urban wind turbine, becoming the first port in Portugal with such equipment. In partnership with the start-up Windcredible, the project aligns with the port’s environmental goals. Installed on the VTS Tower, the 1 kW turbine can supply 30–60% of a medium home’s electricity needs. This pilot project evaluates wind turbines’ feasibility in urban areas, aiming for future production and marketing while boosting urban sustainability and community benefits. This project demonstrates the capacity of port cities and port city actors to innovate and accelerate the energy transition in these territories, two key topics to be discussed in the next World Conference Cities and Ports taking place in Lisbon between the 27th and 29th of November.
