Mystic Seaport Museum adapts to rising sea levels

With scientists predicting that sea levels will rise in the future, the Mystic Seaport Museum (Stonington, United States) is already making plans to tackle the problem. The museum is looking to get ahead of the curve by using data from the Connecticut Institute for Resilience in Climate Adaptation (CIRCA), which estimates that sea levels in the Long Island Sound will rise 20 inches by 2050. Over the last eighteen months, the Mystic Seaport Museum has been working to identify which parts of its campus it wants to keep and what it needs to lose. Resilience and adaptation are key requirements for the site, which was officially designated a flood zone by FEMA, and also in the “floodable area” along the Mystic River that is likely to be impacted by high water levels.

French lottery to finance the protection of marine biodiveristy

The third edition of “Mission Nature” officially began on 28 April, with a special range of scratchcards contributing to efforts aimed at protecting and restoring marine and coastal biodiversity in France and its overseas territories. For every scratchcard sold for the price of 3€, FDJ UNITED will donate 43 cents to the French Office for Biodiversity, to help fund 21 selected projects. Since it was first launched in 2023, the initiative has already raised over €14 million.

New Waterfront Promenade in San Antonio

Puerto San Antonio (Chile) has inaugurated the Paseo Borde Costero Norte, a new urban space over one kilometer long, featuring green areas, children’s play zones, pedestrian paths, sports facilities, and universal access. The project, funded by the port with an investment of 4 billion Chilean pesos, employed 80% local workers from the province. Additionally, the port announced plans to extend the Paseo Bellamar by 400 meters, with an estimated investment of 6 million dollars. This extension aims to enhance public spaces and is scheduled to begin construction in 2027, following design and bidding phases in 2025 and 2026.

Tanger Med powered by floating solar panels

A 13 megawatt floating solar plant is currently being installed on the Oued Rmel dam reservoir near Tangier (Morocco). The plant will supply clean, low-carbon power to the city’s main port, Tanger Med, while also reducing the amount of water the reservoir loses to evaporation. Since 1 January 2025, the Tanger Med port complex has been powered exclusively by green energy, with the onshore power supply (OPS) delivering electricity to ships docked in certain areas of the port. The system will soon be extended to cover all of the wharves at Tanger Med. At the end of 2024, the Port of Tangier received recognition for its climate ambitions in the form of ISO 50001 certification for energy management systems. Tanger Med is also on course to achieve the International Maritime Organisation’s carbon neutrality targets for 2050.

Ecological Design in Sydney Harbor’s New Pier Pavilion

As part of a larger harborside regeneration project, the new pier pavilion is opening in Sydney Harbor (Australia). The pavilion incorporates many ecological features, notably the use of recycled materials, including rock oyster shells to create an “oyster terrazzo.” Infrastructure New South Wales (INSW) stated that nearly half a million oyster shells were recycled for reuse as construction material. They also reported that 92% of the building’s construction waste was recycled. The pavilion also features a landscaped roof with 2,500 native plants designed to attract native insects and birds, creating microhabitats.

The port of Rotterdam funds greenhouse gas reduction measures for local businesses

The port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) has launched Carbonbid, a programme designed to provide funding for local firms’ decarbonisation initiatives. The scheme is open to any business that can show they are taking action to reduce their carbon footprint. It also covers start-ups, service providers, and equipment and machinery manufacturers. The port is investing around 3.5 million euros in the project, which is targeted at emissions from both industrial and logistics activities in Rotterdam’s port zone. It excludes emissions covered by the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS). The port is trialling this new initiative to look at how financial assistance can be used to drive decarbonisation projects by port businesses. Companies have until 18 July to apply, and can request up to 700,000 euros in funding.
