ESA Invests in Coastal Climate Resilience with Focus on Ports

The European Space Agency (ESA) has launched a funding call to improve climate resilience in coastal areas, covering coastal cities, rural regions, and ports. Through its ā€œCoastal Resilience to Climate Changeā€ initiative, ESA will support feasibility studies (up to €500 000) and demonstration projects, funding them partially, from 50 to 80%. The call, open until 31 October 2025, will support technologies such as satellite monitoring, digital twins, and early warning systems aimed at coastal protection. Vulnerable to climate change and yet strategic, ports are one of the program’s main targets.

Port of Newcastle transforms a coal terminal into a Clean Energy Precinct

Port of Newcastle (Australia) has revealed its AU$100 million master plan for its Clean Energy Precinct, incorporating community feedback and flexible infrastructure to support a variety of renewable energy exports. The 220-hectare precinct on Kooragang Island, formerly a coal terminal, will facilitate the production, storage, domestic distribution, and export of green hydrogen and ammonia. The project will use 1.6 gigawatts of electricity and 22 megaliters of recycled water, with no net impact on community utilities. The Clean Energy Precinct is expected to generate 5,800 new jobs and contribute over AU$4.2 billion to the Hunter Region’s gross product by 2040. The transformation of the site reflects a long-term shift in energy and trade for Newcastle, in line with Australia’s decarbonization strategy.

ā€œHavenwereldā€: a collaborative project by the Belgian port community

The sectoral organizations of the Port of Antwerp (Belgium) are combining forces to support the development of the Havenwereld experience center with a joint investment of €863 000. This partnership reflects the port community’s commitment to promoting a unified image of the port as a hub for meetings, education, and inspiration. In addition, several sponsors have already joined the project, ensuring its long-term local anchoring. However, sponsorship opportunities remain open for companies wishing to be associated with this ambitious initiative. The interest shown in the project illustrates a shared ambition: to make the port a visible, accessible, and attractive player for all.

A cetacean monitoring program has been launched in the port of Imbituba (Brazil). The observation period from various shore terminals began on 1 July and is scheduled to end on 30 November 2025. This program provides practical and theoretical training for field teams and sailors to adapt their navigation zone according to the activity and seasonal presence of the species. Thanks to two daily surveillance points operated by three dedicated observers, the annual outlook is positive. This exercise will be the basis for an internal procedure of Good Practices aimed at informing and raising awareness, as well as educational tools (videos, brochures, posters, etc.). The port of Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium) also hosts a species protection program, which was launched in 2014 and renewed in 2022.

Almeria links its port to the city and enhances its heritage

By 2028, AlmerĆa (Spain) will transform its seafront into a vast pedestrian and cultural space, this port city interface project is a result of the collaboration between Puertos del Estado, the Port Authority of AlmerĆa, the Junta de AndalucĆa, and the municipality. More than €24 million will be invested to develop nearly 6.5 hectares. These spaces will include tree-lined promenades, bicycle paths, areas for concerts and open-air shows, as well as beach bars and multi-purpose areas for sports activities, creating an axis between Puerta Purchena and the Levante pier. At the same time, the Port Authority is restoring two industrial icons: the 1960s Babcock & Wilcox crane and the 1929 Deutz locomotive. They will be accessible to the public, fitted with ornamental lighting, and integrated into the new port landscape.

Restoring South Baltimore’s Shoreline Through the Middle Branch Resiliency Initiative

The Middle Branch Resiliency Initiative in South Baltimore (USA) aims to separate sections of the Patapsco River by creating wetlands, tidal channels, and marshes to improve ecological health, absorb storm surges, and reconnect disrupted river ecosystems. With state, local, and philanthropic support they continued to make progress despite the federal government cancelling the BRIC climate program, resulting in a loss of $26 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding. Important projects have been able to continue thanks to new funding from Maryland’s environmental department. These projects include wetland restoration effort at at Hanover Street and Patapsco Delta East, with a third project near MedStar Harbor Hospital set to begin in 2025, all part of the Middle Branch Resiliency Initiative.
