New Cultural and Training Initiatives in the Port City of Livorno

The Port Network Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy) has launched “The Blue Mile of Livorno – Smart Enhancement of Port Cultural Heritage”, selected among the 19 winning projects of the national TAP programme. Through a dedicated digital platform, the Authority is digitising and narrating the centuries-old history of the Port of Livorno, offering access to visual and archival materials while preparing for the physical cultural itinerary within the port. This initiative marks a strategic step in integrating cultural heritage into the port’s identity and development, confirming the Authority’s commitment to innovation, digitalisation, and cultural promotion. In parallel, the port authority has also joined the international PLIKA network, further strengthening its role in training, innovation, and sustainability in the global port sector.

The Port of San Diego invests in sustainable mobility

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of San Diego (USA) has just authorised the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the city of National City to contribute $2 million to the financing of the extension of the greenway along the coastline. This additional segment connects the five cities surrounding the port for a total length of 38 km. The bike path was originally designed by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and is being built in sections by various organisations as funds become available. The National City section is approximately 2.2 km long, with about 200m linear located on tidelands managed by the port. The construction contract is expected to be awarded in September 2025.

Across Europe, ports celebrate their maritime identity

In Spain, the Port of Vigo hosts the 18th edition of the Festa do Marisco from 4 to 7 September 2025 in the Berbés fishing port and will offer seafood, Galician wines, live music and activities for all ages. In Rotterdam (Netherlands), the World Port Days 2025 invite citizens from 5-7 September to discover the city’s maritime identity through ship visits and cultural events. Further north, Oslo’s Havnelangs festival (Norway) will bring activities including boat tours, pirate theatre, skating, and many more to the city’s waterfront on September 7. In Paris (France), HAROPA invites visitors to explore the Port de Javel during the European Heritage Days on September 20 & 21 and discover port facilities, their integration into the landscape, and their contribution to the life of the city.

Algeciras Port unveils its new fish market

The Port Authority of Algeciras (APBA) (Spain) has revealed the tender for a new fish market to replace the old one at the Frigorífico Wharf. The €3.55 million project will be a modern two-story building including an auction hall, storage areas, a cold chamber, offices, and a training room. It will be built on the same site and designed to integrate smoothly into the port-city landscape. A large glass wall will face the city, and solar panels will be installed on the roof. Once completed, the old market will be demolished to reorganise the North-South roadway, as part of the Hércules Project to modernise the port infrastructure.

Port of Rotterdam has deployed donkeys to fight invasive flora

The Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) has brought over three donkeys from Spain to help reduce the rampant sea buckthorn on the pipeline strip area of Geuzenbos. In the port, pipeline strips are essential for the transport of various substances, and for safety reasons, the pipe strip must always be mowed short. Due to the sea buckthorn, which is a rapidly growing, invasive plant, this work is expensive. The 29-hectare site, which is home to two bulls, will also be managed by the donkeys, who prefer to feast on such rugged flora, for the next 1.5 years. They will also provide biodiversity benefits to the area. Local residents will be informed via signage of their presence and the rules of conduct.

Australia aims to recycle more waste from international shipping

The Australian Maritime Recycling Risk Assessment Trial was completed in early 2025 by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). Six ports – Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal, White Bay Cruise Terminal, Port Botany’s Bulk Liquids Berth, Fremantle Port, Gladstone Port and Port of Hay Point – provided access for waste service providers to the terminals and collection points for the waste. The trial aimed to assess the biosecurity risks associated with recyclable materials from internationally arriving ships and identify how to divert this waste from biosecurity treatment (i.e. landfills) to domestic recycling processes. This trial will lead to a broader national maritime waste recycling pilot and to policy changes.
