Port of Helsinki will renovate historic terminal with city’s support

The Port of Helsinki (Finland) will refurbish and expand the historic Katajanokka terminal, built in 1937 by architect Gunnar Taucher. The project, designed by Helin & Co. Architects and Sweco, will start planning in autumn 2025. Cooperation with the City of Helsinki focuses on protecting the environment and preserving the building’s architectural heritage. The refurbished terminal will host both Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line, consolidate Stockholm routes, and free the South Harbour for public use, including the future Museum of Architecture and Design. Construction is scheduled for between 2028 and 2032.

Port of Shanghai amasses green corridors

The Port of Shanghai (China) is expanding its network of Green Shipping Corridors (GSCs) worldwide. On 19 October 2025, the world’s biggest port signed an MoU with the Port of Melbourne (Australia), supported by C40 Cities. In the Pacific, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Shanghai GSC, also supported by C40, completed its phase 1, including shore power expansion, low-carbon vessels, and sustainable fuel bunkering. Shanghai has also launched Digital Green Ro-Ro Corridors with the ports of Barcelona (Spain) and Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium). These initiatives follow other recently established China-Europe corridors, including Ningbo-Zhoushan-HAROPA (France), Qingdao-Hamburg (Germany), and Qingdao-Wilhelmshaven (Germany).

New Jersey’s waterfront and infrastructure redevelopments are underway

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (USA) is seeking proposals for the redevelopment of 6.5 hectares along the Camden Waterfront, including the Riverfront Prison and Weeks Marine sites. This prime location offers views of the Philadelphia skyline and proximity to a public park, making it suitable for mixed-use development. The area connects to the Delaware River and nearby walkable neighbourhoods, providing easy access to waterfront recreation, public transportation, and highway access. Additionally, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is enhancing infrastructure through the Port Street Corridor Improvement (PSCI) Project, which will upgrade roadway access to Port Newark and the Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal.

Tokyo to issue resilience bonds

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (Japan) has unveiled plans to launch the world’s first certified climate resilience bond in October, which is set to raise approximately ¥50 billion ($330 million). It is the first bond certified under the Climate Bonds Resilience Taxonomy. Proceeds from the TOKYO Resilience Bond will finance projects that enhance the capital’s capacity to withstand climate-related risks. Specifically, this will include enhancing river flood resilience, developing coastal protection facilities for Tokyo and surrounding islands, reinforcing river and port infrastructure, and undergrounding power lines to reduce disaster risk. The issuance aligns with Japan’s National Climate Adaptation Plan, supports Tokyo’s ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and showcases a shift toward embedding resilience planning into fiscal and investment policy.

CariPorts II launch: Driving sustainability and innovation in Caribbean Ports

On October 23 2025, the Port of Guadeloupe (France) officially launched the Interreg – CariPorts II project at the Kaz Guadeloupe Port Center. CariPorts is a regional cooperation program led by the Grand Port Maritime de la Guadeloupe and the Caribbean Shipping Association. Its goal is to strengthen environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and the competitiveness of Caribbean ports. Following a first phase (2020–2023) focused on assessing needs and building capacities, CariPorts II (2024–2027) takes the project a step further with the creation and implementation of a Caribbean port label. This label will highlight progress made in ecological transition, innovation, and inter-port cooperation. The project is funded by the Interreg Caribbean 2021–2027 program and involves six ports in the region.

Open ports: Initiatives in Bilbao and Lisbon

The ports of Bilbao (Spain) and Lisbon (Portugal) are multiplying initiatives to weave a more direct and meaningful connection with their respective surrounding territories. In Bilbao, the ‘Kai Jai day’ transformed the port into a space for encounter and discovery, while the revival of the ‘Ezagutu Portua’ program invites residents to explore the inner workings of port activity. In Lisbon, the celebration of the port’s 138th anniversary intertwined heritage, culture, games, and civic engagement. Together, these initiatives embody a shared dynamic: transforming the port into an accessible, interpretable, and vibrant space, helping improve the port-city-citizen relationship.
