HAROPA PORT rings in the New Year with a poetic port performance

For its New Year communication, HAROPA PORT’s creative team (France) launched a moving video clip. Featuring a local dancer suspended by a rope among containers, under gantry cranes, and skimming the water, the short film’s choreography offers a poetic, alternative vision of port life. This original New Year message highlights the port’s landscape and its community, thus showcasing the dialogue between ports and people, while also inviting viewers to pause and admire the beauty of the French port.

Spanish ports detail their roadmaps to net-zero emissions

In early December 2025, the ports of Valencia and Barcelona (Spain) presented their plans for carbon neutrality. Valenciaport targets carbon neutrality and energy self-sufficiency by 2035, covering Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandia, with €900 million investments (€605 million public, €295 million private). Currently, 18% of the port’s energy is produced thanks to solar plants locally; three new wind turbines will raise this to 51%. The plan also includes climate adaptation, terminal electrification, and electric vehicles. Barcelona Port plans €1.7 billion to cut emissions by 85% by 2040 (-50% by 2030), aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, aligning with its ISO-certified carbon footprint and hydrogen production investments.

The Dominican Republic reproduces coral reefs for coastal protection

In the Dominican Republic, scientists are using innovative IVF-like techniques to reproduce corals and rebuild reefs severely damaged by climate-driven ocean warming. Near Bayahibe, coral eggs and sperm are collected during spawning, fertilised in laboratories, and grown in nurseries before being replanted on degraded reefs. Beyond restoring biodiversity, healthy coral reefs are vital for coastal protection, acting as natural breakwaters that reduce wave energy, erosion, and storm surge impacts on ports, coastal cities, and tourism infrastructure. While promising, experts stress that reef reproduction and restoration must be combined with global climate action to ensure long-term coastal resilience.

Revitalising Portland’s Albina Waterfront for local communities

In Portland (USA), the 1803 Fund has unveiled plans to transform the historic Albina Riverside, a three‑acre waterfront site on the Willamette River, as part of a broader effort to revitalise the Albina district. The initiative, backed by a $400 million pledge and nearly $70 million in property purchases, aims to adaptively reuse the former Louis Dreyfus grain silos and create mixed‑use public, cultural, and community spaces that reconnect Albina to the river and support Black community ownership. Plans include surrounding mixed‑use development, housing, and public amenities designed with community input, with planning and construction expected over the next several years.

South Manhattan moves towards a model for better flood protection

Launched in 2021, the Financial District and Seaport Climate Resilience Master Plan aims to guide future infrastructure work to enable better flood management in this neighbourhood of New York City (USA). At the end of 2025, NYC EDC and the City of New York updated this plan and informed residents of the project’s progress. Since its launch, 30% of the master plan’s design has been completed, new financing mechanisms have been devised, and more than 40 workshops and events have been organised. One of the key points of the project is the protection of transportation infrastructure from flooding, particularly the ferry terminal and subway stations. A redevelopment is planned, incorporating new public spaces. The complexity of the financial arrangements and the size of the project are such that the study and consultation phases will continue for several more years.

New momentum for clean river transport

In Busan (South Korea), the government has launched its first electric ferry. This marks an important step in the national strategy to decarbonise port and maritime operations. The ferry will operate on a route between the north and south ports. By 2030, 140 state-owned ferries will be powered by cleaner energy sources. In London, the UK’s first electric ferry has made its maiden voyage. Owned and operated by Uber Boat – Thames Clippers, it has received funding from the Department for Transport and the National Innovation Agency. Concurrently, the Port of London has published a report on urban river logistics on the Thames, bringing together all the public measures available to those wishing to try modal shift, also highlighting challenges that still need to be overcome.
