The city and port of Quebec announce their joint vision

Bruno Marchand, mayor of Quebec City (Canada), and Olga Farman, CEO of the Port of Quebec, announced the City-Port Vision 2026-2035 on the 15th of January. The Vision aims to benefit citizens, riverside communities, and economic stakeholders. It reflects a desire to undertake the modernisation of port infrastructure, which will support regional competitiveness and prosperity. Actions are already underway, including speed reduction and increased control of heavy vehicles in the Old Port. Sharing of mobility data, improved urban integration through the evolution of the governance of public spaces, and the establishment of a biennial forum with stakeholders on port trends are planned for the coming years. The opening of the new AIVP office in Quebec further underlines the Vision’s ambitions.

Lisbon Port launches survey to assess its social license with citizens

The Port of Lisbon (Portugal) has launched a public survey to gain a deeper understanding of community perceptions regarding port–city relations in Lisbon. Entitled “Social License of the Port of Lisbon,” the anonymous questionnaire targets residents without direct professional links to the port. It invites participants to assess the port’s economic and social contribution, environmental management, transparency, risk governance, and opportunities for public participation. Respondents may also share concerns and suggestions for the port’s future development. By gathering local feedback, the port authority aims to strengthen trust, improve dialogue, and support more inclusive decision-making, reinforcing a balanced and evolving relationship between the port, the city, and its communities.

Abbot Point faces cyclone Koji with an effective early-response strategy

Australia’s Abbot Point coal port showcased the strength of its extreme weather protocols during Cyclone Koji. Continuous weather monitoring allowed port authorities to close operations early and safely reposition 15 – 20 vessels. Key equipment was secured and activities were paused during the storm. Afterwards, a rapid inspection confirmed no major damage. Systems were gradually tested, enabling partial operations to resume within 48 hours and full capacity within two weeks. The port’s swift, coordinated response demonstrates how a proactive strategy ensures operational continuity even in extreme weather conditions.

Vietnamese public authorities are investing politically in the maritime sector

In early January 2026, Resolution 79 of the Vietnamese Politburo (the office that directs the general orientation of the government) was signed. It shows a strong political and economic focus on infrastructure, particularly in the maritime sector. One of the ambitions is for a Vietnamese company to be ranked among the world’s 500 largest companies. According to this strategy, companies supported by the Vietnamese state must guide the national economy towards autonomy and resilience and lead the country to a high-income status by 2045. The maritime sector is considered strategic and must be a priority investment for national companies. Reinforcing this dynamic, at the local level in Hue, the deep-water port of Chan May will be expanded with the construction of Pier 6, which has just been approved by the local people’s committee, an investment of more than $35 million.

LA Maritime Museum presents its archives to the public

The Los Angeles Maritime Museum (USA), housed in the city’s original Ferry Building, connects the City of Angels with its port through exhibitions and, now, open-house events highlighting the museum’s library and archival collections. These behind-the-scenes visits showcase historical materials on shipbuilding, fishing, canning, and key changes to the port’s infrastructure, including exhibits on commercial diving, Japanese-American history, the canneries, and maritime labour. Sponsored by the Friends of the L.A. Maritime Museum, the open houses also benefit from the Port of Los Angeles Community Investment Grant Program. This spring, the museum will open “Waves of Change,” an exhibition tracing the port’s history from Indigenous societies to the present day.

“Ports for People“: Newark’s initiative to protect community health

Newark City Council (USA) has introduced the “Ports for People: Newark Fossil Free Future Ordinance” aimed at protecting public health, clean air, and the long-term well-being of communities living around the port and industrial zone. The ordinance addresses community concerns that have been present over the past few years by taking a step towards stopping fossil fuel expansion, which has already led to increased asthma and respiratory illnesses in the community. It does so by stopping public funding for polluting infrastructure, amending land-use codes to prohibit new or expanded fossil fuel facilities, and advancing environmental justice and ambitions. The ordinance also supports the goal of reducing greenhouse gases and reaching 100% clean energy by 2035 in New Jersey.
