European ports are exploring nuclear energy as a lever for decarbonisation. A recent report, using the Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) as a case study, concludes that existing port safety frameworks can serve as a starting point for assessing calls by nuclear-powered vessels. In parallel, the Port of Constanta (Romania) launches a feasibility study on the integration of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) to meet its long-term energy needs. The study will model the port’s energy demand from 2030 to 2050.

Ports are investing in new tools and infrastructure to support growing electricity demand linked to decarbonisation. In Oslo (Norway), the port authority has launched a pilot project for the digital management of energy infrastructure, enabling real-time monitoring and optimisation of electricity use as shore power and charging facilities expand. Meanwhile, the Port of Tallinn (Estonia) has announced the construction of a new electrical substation to increase grid capacity and support the development of shore power services for cruise ships. Together, these initiatives reflect the growing importance of energy planning and management as ports accelerate electrification and reduce emissions from maritime activities.

The Port of Marseille-Fos (France) has launched a new phase of public consultation on its development projects in Fos-sur-Mer and Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône (France). Supported by the National Commission for Public Debate (CNDP), the process combines local meetings, site visits and discussions with residents to inform the public and gather feedback. Planned events include an information session at the Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône market on 1 July 2026 and a guided tour of the Fos 3XL, ZSP2 and Distriport sites on 8 July. These major infrastructure projects are intended to improve maritime traffic while encouraging a modal shift to rail and inland waterways. The consultation follows the 2025 Fos Berre Provence public debate and builds on the Port-City Dialogue launched in 2021 by local and regional authorities.

The European Commission has taken a further step by adopting, for the first time, a dedicated policy framework for islands and coastal territories. The aim is to better address the challenges faced by these regions, including geographical isolation, ageing populations, housing pressures and the impacts of climate change, such as coastal erosion, sea-level rise and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. Brussels plans a series of measures to improve transport connectivity, support innovative maritime activities, promote clean energy and strengthen territorial resilience. The roadmap for coastal communities is built around 13 priority actions, while the strategy for islands is structured around four main pillars. Through this initiative, the European Union seeks to turn these territories into key drivers of the blue and sustainable transition.

Gyeongsang Province and the city of Gimhae in South Korea have announced a regional tourism development plan centred on Gimhae Airport, the Port of Busan and the Port of Masan. The project, named “Gateway to Global Travel in Southeast Asia, Gimhae: Haneul-ro, Sea-ro, Gimhae-ro”, represents an investment of 12 billion won over five years, from 2026 to 2030. The South Korean authorities aim to attract more foreign tourists, capitalising on the proximity of port and airport infrastructure, by focusing on cultural and sporting attractions.
