The Scottish port of Montrose (Scotland) will soon have a training centre dedicated to offshore wind. On 23 June 2026, the Scottish Government and the Tay Cities Region Joint Committee approved funding for the project, backed by £1.25 million from the Tay Cities Industrial Investment Programme. The decision marks the culmination of two years of joint work between Angus Council, Montrose Port Authority, and Dundee and Angus College, who had already begun restoring the historic listed Customs House building for this purpose. Once established on the port’s North Quay, the future Montrose Port Skills Academy will train the technicians of tomorrow. Turbine manufacturer Vestas, which supplies the Seagreen and Inch Cape offshore wind farms, will launch its own apprenticeship programme there from August 2026.

In Stratford (United States) and Constitución (Chile), two port projects are moving forward thanks to dialogue with the territory. Point Stratford Renewal, the private firm in charge of redeveloping the site, consulted residents on the future of a former 77-acre military plant on the waterfront. To do so, it held a community meeting, launched an open survey and hosted open house sessions. In Chile, several seminars introduced residents and academics to the Puerto del Maule project, which includes terminals for containers and bulk cargo. In both cases, direct contact with local stakeholders helped align the projects with the territory’s real needs and better anticipate their environmental and social impact.

The construction of the Ouagadougou Multimodal Dry Port (PSMO), located 25 km from the Burkinabe capital, will be partly funded by the West African Development Bank ((WADB/BOAD). Lacking direct access to the sea, Burkina Faso had already developed the Boborinter dry port in Bobo-Dioulasso and is increasingly relying on such logistics platforms to support its economic development. The country joins other West African Economic and Monetary Union members, including Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire and even Nigeria, in investing in dry ports to streamline logistics flows.

Carbon credits are an increasingly important tool for financing biodiversity conservation initiatives. In Central Africa, the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin, led by the Development Bank of Central African States, will rely on carbon credits to finance its initiatives for the sustainable management of ecosystems and the development of the blue economy. This support is essential to cover the $5.32 billion required for the first round of planned investments. The Port of London, for its part, is offering its intertidal wetland areas as biodiversity credits (Biodiversity Net Gain), which are a requirement for all urban and industrial developments in the United Kingdom. This is another way of funding the conservation of the many biodiversity areas managed by the Port.

Ports Iles Balears (PortsIB) has just invested €1.1 million in the port of Porto Cristo (Spain), in the heart of the town of Manacor, to refurbish a promenade, quays and sailing facilities. The new infrastructure is more reliable and environmentally friendly, thanks to improved electrification and a new connection to the sewage network. The works were carried out in conjunction with the underground installation of electrical cables and optimise the use of space within the marina, facilitating the maintenance of port areas across the Balearic Islands. In the same vein, the port of Canet-en-Roussillon (France) has just invested over €1 million in a treatment and recycling plant for the port’s hull-cleaning water. This means that businesses based there will no longer need to use drinking water to wash their boats.

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism launched the open-access Caribbean Blue Economy Knowledge Hub in collaboration with the FAO and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. It will consolidate the region’s expertise and insight on fisheries, aquaculture, and marine spatial planning to allow small-scale fishers to benefit. Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Panama and Saint Lucia will have access to the shared repository of Blue Economy data, best practices, policy tools, and technical insight across seven thematic areas. It also provides the market frameworks, training, and certification pathways for seafood standards as well as value chain intelligence.
