Ports are advancing the decarbonisation of landside logistics through cleaner truck fleets and digital technologies. The Port of Los Angeles (USA) has opened a new US$75 million funding round to accelerate the deployment of zero-emission drayage trucks, combining EPA Clean Ports funding with revenues from its existing Clean Truck Fund. Meanwhile, the Port of Felixstowe (UK) is expanding its fleet of autonomous terminal trucks to 100 units, improving operational efficiency, safety and the environmental performance of cargo handling. Together, these initiatives illustrate how ports are combining electrification and automation to support more sustainable and efficient freight transport.

CEREMA is a French public body whose remit is to support local authorities in carrying out their projects. This series on “Marinas of the Future” presents the winning case studies from the “Destination France” programme, which aimed, between 2022 and 2023, to support local authorities in financing and accelerating the ecological and energy transition, as well as the modernisation of marinas and their adaptation to climate change. The factsheets present a variety of practical examples of projects such as the greening of the port areas at Port Gallice, where the site has been completely redeveloped, and the optimisation of water management at Port Leucate, which has introduced a closed-loop dry dock facility.

To facilitate the development of blue economy activities within its jurisdiction, the Port of San Francisco (USA) is set to provide financial incentives to the sector. Eligible businesses operating in the blue economy sector will be able to benefit from reductions of up to 50 per cent on leases for sites along the 12 km of waterfront owned by the port. San Francisco aims to position itself as a key hub for innovation in the maritime economy. This programme, known as the “Blue Economy Initiative”, will focus specifically on the sectors of seafood farming, clean energy, Bay health, sustainable tourism, digital technology and AI, and will also address skills development across all these areas. A second phase of the programme should enable more targeted support for these businesses and the creation of innovation hubs.

The port of Bordeaux (France) will complete its Port Center project at the Bassins à flot location by the end of 2028 or early 2029. As part of the port’s 2026-2030 strategic plan, this future 2,250 m² facility, complemented by a 1,000 m² esplanade, will include exhibition spaces, a maritime business centre, meeting rooms, offices, a restaurant area and a maritime history museum. Designed by Ylé Architectes, the project focuses on a wooden structure inspired by naval architecture, a 100-tree landscaped park and low-carbon solutions (bio-based materials, reuse of materials and natural ventilation). The investment amount has not yet been disclosed. The project aims to strengthen long-term ties between the port and local communities and is now entering a technical and financial development phase ahead of the building permit application scheduled for the first half of 2027.

Around the world, ports are adopting long-term strategies to reconcile port development with sustainability. The Massachusetts Port Authority (United States) is accelerating its carbon neutrality plan. It now aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2028, three years ahead of its initial target. More than 500 million dollars have been invested since 2022. In Australia, GeelongPort is launching its first Sustainability Strategy 2026-2030. It sets a path toward carbon neutrality by 2030 for scope 1 and 2 emissions. The strategy integrates sustainability into the port’s governance, investments, and operations. In San Antonio (Chile), the city-port coordination council has adopted its 2026-2027 work plan. Its main goal is to build a city-port vision for 2050 to harmonize port, urban, and social development.

The Cyprus ports authority has presented a €415 million redevelopment programme for Larnaca Port and Marina. The project is divided into three parallel subprojects: port modernisation, marina land redevelopment and marina infrastructure rehabilitation. The plan extends to 2045, with a master plan expected to be delivered by 2029. The strategic objective is to strengthen Larnaca’s role in maritime transport while reconnecting the waterfront. Continuous public access between the marina and the port is planned. The ports authority will manage infrastructure, maintenance and strategic oversight. Commercial and tourism development will be entrusted to private investors.
