In Oslo (Norway), greenhouse gas emissions from shipping and port operations have fallen from 47,700 to 31,505 tonnes of CO2. This result is the outcome of a zero-emissions action plan implemented since 2017. The aim is to achieve an 85% reduction by 2030. The electrification of port operations is making a significant contribution to the green transition and benefits both the port and the city. However, this progress is not being driven solely by investments from the Port of Oslo itself. The port’s enterprises are also playing a crucial role in supporting the port’s initiative.

Four warehouses at the port of Asunción (Paraguay) are being transformed into an entertainment hub. The project, costing an estimated US$6 million investment, should open before the end of 2026. This historic waterfront, now little used, is finding a new urban purpose. The site will host sports facilities, shops, dining and venues for concerts and conventions. The project keeps the area’s industrial identity, including its original cranes, and reinforces the historic quay. It durably reconnects the city with the Paraguay River, right in the heart of Asunción’s historic centre, between the old railway station and the Government Palace.

Australia has released its Maritime Emissions Reduction National Action Plan (MERNAP), setting seven priorities for decarbonising the domestic maritime sector and supporting international shipping’s transition. The plan focuses on the energy–port–shipping nexus, including investment in low-carbon fuel storage and bunkering, shore power and port energy infrastructure. It also promotes green and digital shipping corridors, support for emerging vessel technologies and demand aggregation for regional operators. Upskilling the maritime workforce is another priority, alongside efforts to reduce regulatory barriers for first movers.

Bellingham (USA) has been selected to receive technical assistance by the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure to build an industrial symbiosis hub. The Port envisions using this opportunity to explore creating an industrial symbiosis hub that connects resource streams from the agricultural and forestry sectors in rural areas of Whatcom County to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and create value from underutilized materials. The project will be implemented in four phases from September 2026 to June 2027. The Bellingham waterfront will be the main hub, and the project will include collaborations with many local partners, including the City of Bellingham and Whatcom County. 

Launched at national level, the SCAN programme aims to identify suitable locations for the use of geothermal energy in the Netherlands. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source used for heat production. This national programme is based on 2D and 3D seismic surveys. A survey in the western part of the country has just been launched and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The Port of Amsterdam is currently at the centre of this study. If the site proves suitable, this could be a significant source of decarbonisation for the organisation and the businesses located within its area.
