It was the last stage of a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aivp.org\/en\/2018\/10\/09\/an-aivp-benchmark-to-support-the-growth-of-the-cruise-business-in-le-havre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cruise benchmarking process<\/a><\/span> carried out by AIVP at the request of stakeholders in Le Havre.<br \/>\nThe aim of the exercise was to support efforts to create conditions for sustainable development of the vibrant cruise activity in Le Havre by the period 2020-2025, and to make the area around the cruise ship docks a real asset contributing to the attractiveness of the City Port of Le Havre.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The benchmarking exercise was intended to identify practices and solutions deployed to improve the spatial integration of cruise terminals in the city and open them up to the public, both during and outside the cruise season.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccruise benchmark\u201d working group had selected Porto and the Port of Leixoes as the site of a field assignment, from a shortlist of six port cities in which AIVP had undertaken an extensive search for information.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20099\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20099\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aivp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/002-porto_benchmark-croisiere_aivp-le-havre_01540-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"416\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20099\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Cruise Benchmark working group with Helena Fernandez, Director for Commercial and Marketing of ADPL ((Portos do Douro e Leixoes), and Maria Am\u00e9lia Castro, Director Study and Planning Department (APDL)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20096\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20096 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aivp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/001-south-terminal_copyright_apdl_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"304\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>South Cruise Terminal \u00a9 APDL<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Le Havre saw Porto as a place of particular interest, in view of its plans to create an iconic new terminal combining port and urban functions (including a research centre). The building is also capable of hosting events when not in use for cruises or during the off-season. As a result, it is one of the examples featured in<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aivp.org\/guidedebonnespratiques\/en\/plan-the-city-with-the-port-guide-of-good-practices\/spatial-organisation\/a-what-to-do-about-the-lack-of-available-space\/a-3-mix-urban-and-port-functions\/matosinhos-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our recommendation on mixed-use development<\/a><\/span> in our Guide of Best Practices. Seeing the building first-hand, however, served to illustrate the full scale of the project!<\/p>\n\n<p>Following earlier talks between AIVP and Helena Fernandez, Director for Commercial and Marketing at ADPL (Port of Douro e Leixoes), representatives from the Port of Le Havre and the Urban Conurbation of Le Havre were presented with a comprehensive programme of activities. These included a tour of the North and South cruise terminals at which cruise ships dock, and in-depth discussions on development and functions with the various local stakeholders, such as the Port\u2019s head of planning, the terminal manager, the architect who designed the South cruise terminal, and also a Director from CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research), a facility based in the South terminal.<\/p>\n\n<p>It was also an opportunity to discover the activities of the port of Leixoes and the often innovative strategies adopted by the port authorities of Douro e Leixoes, including a one-stop-shop and business incubator, etc. during a tour and additional presentations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20145\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aivp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/012-south-terminal_copyright-aivp20191001_093605-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aivp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/012-south-terminal_copyright-aivp20191001_093605-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"407\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Cruise Benchmark group, with Helena Fernandez, Director for Commercial and Marketing de l\u2019ADPL (Portos do Douro e Leixoes), and Marta S\u00e1 Lemos, Head of Porto Cruise Terminal (APDL)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are naturally delighted with this very productive exchange of experiences between Le Havre and Porto, both members of AIVP.
