Climate change
The Panama Canal introduces emissions-based fees to tackle climate change
With some 14,000 vessels per year or 36 per day passing through the canal, the regulatory authority has taken the courageous decision as part of its efforts to combat climate change. Fees for using the canal will be adjusted based on the sustainability index and air pollution output of each vessel. A ranking will be attributed to ships over 38 metres in length, with financial penalties for the biggest polluters. Although only 3.5% of international trade passes through the canal, the decision should accelerate the decarbonisation movement. When can we expect to see a similar mechanism introduced on the Suez Canal?
