Systematica (Milan, Italy) launches its new research foundation Fondazione Transform Transport
At the end of April, the Milan-based transport consultancy Systematica announced it was launching its own research foundation, Fondatione Transform Transport. The creation of this new institution is part of moves to develop their Transform Transport research unit. In 2022, the foundation will submit around ten H2020 projects, in addition to the twenty or so scientific articles already published this year. It will also look to ensure a maximum audience for its latest work Shifting Paradigm, which includes a selection of high quality publications on the impact of Covid-19 on transport planning.

APM Terminals Mumbai (India) Launches a Railway Service
APM Terminals Mumbai has introduced a rail service specifically for repositioning of empty containers. This is a direct solution to the growing congestion on roads due to increased market demands. This initiative allows shipping lines and individual customers to reposition their empty inventory by rail from the container terminal to inland depots or vice versa, or even between individual depots via the terminal in a safer, faster, cost-competitive, and environmentally friendly way. Another benefit is that it allows for more transparency of the locations of the containers, better planning of the supply chain, and for quicker turn time for the empty equipment.

Marseille (France): the ferry “Méditerranée” provides a refuge for around 700 Ukrainians
The ferry owned by the company Corsica Linea has been leased by the French State, and since 29/03 has housed several hundred Ukrainian refugees, mainly women and children. The emergency floating accommodation aims to help the refugees integrate into French society. The charity “Group SOS”, which is responsible for arrangements on board the ferry, is helping the refugees to complete administrative formalities and find jobs. The children are taught in local state schools. The refugees leave the ferry when they have a stable situation. This temporary arrangement will end on 10/06, when the Méditerraneé leaves for Algeria.
Hervé Martel, Chairman of the Port of Marseille’s Executive Board, will be speaking during the “renewed port city governance” session at our forthcoming world conference in Tangier.

Biodiversity
Alongside the Brussels-Capital region, the Port of Brussels (Belgium) commits to biodiversity
Following the agreement signed with Bruxelles Environnement in 2019, the Port of Brussels installed plant rafts designed by Biomatrix and Ecocéan (a member of AIVP) on 26 April 2022. Formed of cages made from coconut fibre and aquatic plants, the rafts will serve as refuges for biodiversity in the canals. They will encourage egg-laying and the development of juvenile fish, as their structure will soon be covered with micro-organisms on which they will feed. If it proves successful, the project could be continued with funding from the Brussels-Capital region, and will be included in the new environmental policies under the port operating agreement.

Montreal (Canada): an environmental study for the town of Contrecœur
In the coming months, the organisation Arbre-Évolution will be conducting a study of afforestation and wildlife connectivity in Contrecœur natural environments. The project aims to identify sites with the best potential for restoration or reforestation in this municipality, located a short distance north of the port of Montreal.
Based on the findings, various environmental protection measures will be deployed in connection with plans to expand the Port of Montreal in Contrecoeur. The study will also document the condition of local ecosystems and allow projects to be supported.
