San Francisco (USA): the WETA moves to reduce the carbon footprint of its ferry fleet
This week, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) obtained a subsidy from the California State Transportation Agency to develop a network of electric ferries. The subsidy will be used to fund the construction of ferries and docks, to connect the waterfront districts. This decision will lower the carbon footprint of mobilities across the Bay Area. By replacing the existing ferries with a new, more environmentally-friendly fleet, the use of cars in the region will be reduced, in turn cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Video – a floating 110 metre wind turbine deployed in Bilbao (Spain)
Generating electricity anywhere: that is the challenge taken up by a floating wind turbine demonstrator in Bilbao. The 110 metre-tall turbine can be installed at depths of 85 metres, hugely expanding the potential area of Spanish waters in which this technology can be used. Initially, the demonstrator will be equipped with a 2 MW turbine. It was unveiled in the port at a ceremony attended by the Spanish minister for the energy transition and port executives. The companies Saitec and RWE worked together on the demonstrator, which will contribute to on-going efforts to raise the offshore wind fleet’s capacity to 3 GW by 2030.

San Antonio (Chile): a city-port-citizens conciliation plan to protect the lagoons
The Ojos de Mar are a collection of lakes situated close to the mouth of the Rio Maipo, within the territory of San Antonio. The southern breakwater of the Port of San Antonio is in direct contact with these lakes, separating them from the Rio Maipo. At the initiative of the environmental court, local stakeholders will have ten days to express their expectations for the future of these lakes. The port, the municipality, citizens, and the State will all have the opportunity to give their view. As Luis Knaak, CEO of the Port de San Antonio, explains, the aim of the procedure ordered by the environmental court is to reconcile environmental protection with logistical activities.
