Humboldt Bay: a good example of floating wind turbine terminals

Ports will be on the front line when it comes to building and maintaining the floating wind platforms of tomorrow. The port of Humboldt Bay (United States) has funded a conceptual master plan for a terminal specifically adapted for floating offshore wind. Although the design is not due to be finalised until mid-2024, there is already a fairly clear picture of what the facility will look like. The terminal will have a launch dock, with semi-submersible barges, a vertical assembly zone, and storage areas for floating elements, blades, towers, anchors, and turbines. Construction plants will be based on-site for blades and towers. The site will be connected to road and rail links. It will sit alongside the village of Samoa, which it is hoped will benefit from a substantial economic boost.

Protecting the shore of Riga from climate change impact

The Port of Riga (Latvia) has concluded the restoration works of the Daugavgrīva shore reinforcement, allowing the pedestrian access once again. This work continues the restoration project started in 2020 with boulders and pules of granite stones. The coastline was damaged in the past by storms and rising sea level making unsafe for public access. Today, 300 meters of the structure have been completed, while the reinforcing works will continue next year. Thanks to this intervention, the area has also been improved making safer and more comfortable for pedestrians and cyclists.

Spain is exploring green fuels production

The Spanish Government has signed a General Protocol for Collaboration with A.P. Moller-Maersk to jointly explore the opportunities for large-scale green fuels production. The project would explore the feasibility of the entire value chain from renewable energy sources to bunkering of vessels. For Maersk this collaboration is also lucrative, as they will be placing their main centers if green methanol production in Spain to decarbonize their fleet. Photovoltaic and wind power plants will have to be built throughout Spain to support the production of the green fuels. The government estimates that up to 5000 direct jobs will be created from this collaboration.

Canadian ports actively restoring their local habitats

The Port of Montreal and Port Saint John are both actively participating in the restauration of local habitats. The Port of Montreal will financially support the project to restore the riparian buffer strips on Ile Bouchard, a priority ecosystem of the region as it is host to wetlands and vulnerable species. The project involved planting 500 native trees and shrubs in the area. Port Saint John’s staff helped plant saplings near Hazen Creek. This is in line with their environmental policy of 2011 and their role as stewards of that ecosystem.
