AIVP’s Port members are focused on innovation hubs

The Ports of Lisbon (Portugal), Barcelona (Spain), and La Spezia (Italy) are creating innovation hubs to accelerate maritime sustainable development. The Port of Lisbon launched its Innovation Acceleration Program for the Blue Economy, which will focus on scaling important technologies in the fields of digitalization, decarbonization, intermodality and circularity. The Port of Barcelona also opened its BCN Port Innovation Foundation, which will fund projects to help turn the port into a smart and sustainable logistics hub. Lastly, the Port Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea is collaborating with the FAROS program by opening a Blue Economy accelerator hub in La Spezia, with a focus on accelerating processes relevant to the vocations of the territory.

Port of Melbourne sets ambitious Net Zero Targets

The Port of Melbourne (Australia) has set themselves the target to achieve Scope 1 and 2 net zero emissions for port operations by 2030. To achieve this transition, the port stated that it would source all electricity required from renewables. All corporate vehicles and marine survey vessels would be transitioned to electric or zero-emissions fuel technologies. The port will also continue its monitoring efforts to understand its climate impact and inform its decarbonization plans. Amongst these plans, a green methanol bunker is also being considered with various stakeholders. Melbourne is one of the most recent cases of establishing a port vision, further strengthening the importance of the discussion the AIVP will have during its 2023 Venice Conference in November on how to integrate the citizens into these visions.

US laws and funds to improve maritime resilience

On June 6th, President Biden announced 2.6 billion dollars in federal funding for coastal climate resilience. The funds will go to local stakeholders for projects to protect against the effects of climate change to strengthen the resilience of the power grid. These investments are being made through laws on climate, energy, and infrastructures, and are a response to proposals for legislation put forward by Congress aimed at imposing carbon intensity standards for maritime fuels, along with a pollution tax for the biggest vessels unloading cargo at US ports.

The port of Bilbao and Amsterdam reach a deal to promote a green corridor

The ports of Bilbao (Spain) and Amsterdam (the Netherlands), along with their partners, will work together on the development of a new supply chain for renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels. The collaboration will encourage the Spanish and Dutch entities to share their experience with the shared goal of reducing pollutant emissions. The project is also in line with the Basque hydrogen-based strategy, which aims to promote both local use and international markets. The Port of Bilbao will draw on its experience in the field of renewable hydrogen production to export the fuel to the Netherlands and the European hinterland through the Port of Amsterdam.
