Pontoons and cycle paths providing local power

Photovoltaic panels were installed on the pontoons at the port of La Baule (France) last July, to supply electricity to the boats moored nearby. The panels, which are suitable for walking on, were developed by the firm Wattway by Colas. The company is also working to adapt the technology for use on cycle paths and recently signed a deal with two Dutch provinces to install the technology over an area of 1,000 m2 each. By using pre-existing paths, the solution generates renewable electricity without having to pave over more land.

Catalonia and the port of CastellĂłn throw their support behind innovative SMEs

The MoU between the Generalitat de Catalunya and the port authority of CastellĂłn aims to put the city of CastellĂłn (Spain) on the technological map, with the active support of the municipality. An initial budget of 100,000 euros has been earmarked to promote the development of a hub for high-tech SMEs either on port-owned land or connected to it. A disused hangar will be made available to house a start-up incubator. The aim is to provide a space where small businesses can network and build partnerships.

Freedom Park in San Diego: New public space to honor war veterans

The Port of San Diego (USA) and USS Midway Museum will create the new Freedom Park by transforming Navy Pier, dedicating 4 Ha of the Embarcadero area. The park, set to open in 2028, will honor military history and everyday heroes. Today, the USS Midway Museum, a refurbished aircraft carrier from the US Navy, attracts approximately 1 million visitors each year. The first steps to creating the park have already been taken by the Port of San Diego, with the structural reinforcement of the pier. The estimated $65 million project includes park features like pathways, landscaping, play structures, memorials, coastal access, restrooms, and a snack concessionaire. Notable elements include the John Finn Memorial and a mobile phone microsite for park history.

A new innovation laboratory for Quebec

The Port of Quebec (Canada) has officially launched “Le Phare” innovation laboratory, in line with their 2035 Agenda and commitment to innovation. “Le Phare” aims to make the Port’s infrastructures and resources available to start-up companies, to integrate innovation into port operations, to support and work closely with the academic community, and to promote innovative actions internationally. The Port of QuĂ©bec has partnered more closely with two key players: 2 DegrĂ©s and Novarium. Novarium, a new AIVP member, is an innovation campus dedicated to the blue economy, generating synergies between Quebec entrepreneurs, research centers, investors and industry. They will help help open the vision to all stakeholders in the St. Lawrence port ecosystem.
