Study shows where 84 ports across Europe need to invest

The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) commissioned a study by AIVP expert Peter de Langen. As part of the study, a questionnaire was sent out to gauge the investment needs of ports of all sizes. The feedback showed that the energy transition accounts for 24% of the investment needed by ports, while almost 26% is required for infrastructure development. Whereas “urban functions” make up just 3% of the total investment needed, the study also looked at the role ports aim to play, with nearly 40% indicating they feel a responsibility to civil society, in terms of both the environment and quality of life.

Eventually, the facilities should be extended to provide on shore power to fishing vessels. Charging stations will also be available for light land vehicles. The port is committed to playing its part in the collective effort to achieve the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Italian Ports open to the local communities

The first section of the Italian Port Days (11th of April – 30th of May) provides a new window of opportunity for many ports to organize new activities with the local communities. For example, North Adriatic Sea Port Authority – Ports of Venice and Chioggia hosted a walk in the port as well as a special day dedicated to raise awareness of safety and security. In Livorno, the Port Authority is collaborating with local stakeholders to organize a cultural program in the grain Silo, including visits, theater, concerts, and exhibitions. Other ports are organizing major international events, such as the Deportibus Festival with numerous conferences, including a strong focus on the port-city relationship, to which the AIVP will contribute. Other cases, such as Taranto have launched call for artists, for their own port days during the 2nd part of the Italian Port Days in autumn.
