Reinvestment of dividends in climate measures in Oslo
Hav Eiendom, the company responsible for the large-scale development of a district of Oslo (Norway), is to pay NOK 150 million (€13 million) to the Port of Oslo for the year 2023. These dividends are intended to finance measures to make the Port of Oslo one of the most sustainable urban ports in the world, while providing greater accessibility for citizens to the waterfront. The Sydhavna logistics centre, to the east of Fjorbyden, in particular, will benefit from these additional funds to develop and modernise.

Health and life quality
Port of Savannah will assess its environmental impact
As a major cargo container port in the USA, the Port of Savannah has announced that it will be conducting its first assessment of climate-impacting pollution from port operations. The Georgia Ports Authority’s report will include an assessment of carbon dioxide levels and other federally regulated pollutants that can impact human health and the environment at the facility along the Savannah River. An important step forward in the decarbonization goals, largely supported by the US Clean Ports Program, launched in February 2024. The report will be subject to an external review and will be rendered public, allowing the port community and environmental groups to assess the port’s impact on air quality, the health of citizens, and its contribution to climate change.

Energy transition and circular economy
Scottish ports are focusing on offshore wind power
Ports across Scotland have come together to optimize the opportunities for offshore wind by launching the Scottish Wind Ports Alliance. The alliance will develop opportunities to enhance regional competitiveness, drive efficiencies, and strengthen the required expertise for the sector as well as share knowledge and collaborate. Investments in the offshore wind sector abound, as can be seen through the £100 million investment into Haventus’ Ardersier Port (UK) to facilitate its redevelopment into a significant infrastructure facility to support industrial-scale deployment of fixed and floating offshore wind. With the funds, the port will develop a 450-acre site with quayside access and infrastructure for manufacturing and assembly of offshore wind components. Herewith, the Scottish ports are highlighting their importance in the energy transition.

Inauguration of an imposing skatepark along the canal in Brussels
Under construction since September 2023, the ‘Allée du Kaai’ skatepark on the Quai des Matériaux in Brussels (Belgium) has just opened to the public. The abutment of the Suzan Daniel bridge, which overlooks it, will be used as a vertical obstacle by skateboarders. This 2,150m2 skatepark – one of the largest in Belgium, at a total cost of €14,800,000 – is part of a 2.8ha leisure park set up along the canal between Sainctelette and Place des Armateurs. This already included two large sports fields and a large picnic area. According to Rudi Vervoort, Minister-President of the Brussels Region, this park will link the city centre with the canal zone, which is less well-known to visitors.

An immersive piano concert in the port of Tarragona
On Sunday 3 June, pianist Lidia Papió gave a unique concert in Tarragona (Spain). Installed in the ‘Sustainability Dome’, she was accompanied by a 360-degree audiovisual performance that took spectators on a poetic journey highlighting biodiversity. Since February, this ephemeral space located in the former warehouses of the Moll docks has been combining culture and technology to raise public awareness of sustainability issues. Supported by the Port of Tarragona, this eco-social project aims to rethink the links between the human community and the planet. Events are being organised until 23 June.
