Ports of Talcahuano plans to develop with the community

Ports of Talcahuano (Chile) have identified four key axes for port activity growth that also benefit the communities that coexist with the ports. This new proposal for growth in line with the community comes ahead of a series of challenges in line with a new concession. The four key axes include a new concession of the Port of San Vicente in 2029 that promotes investment projects and allows sustainable growth of cargoes. The second axis focuses on strategic connectivity developments and the third on the role of the ports in establishing a sustainable port city, which includes promoting dialogues with neighbours to improve authorities’ decision-making. The fourth aim is to strengthen the port-city integration.

A demonstration of the future Baltic Green Corridor

In the Baltic Sea, two green corridors are currently being developed with the help of Viking Line: one between Stockholm (Sweden) and Turku (Finland) and one between Helsinki (Finland) and Tallinn (Estonia). For one week, the Viking Line ferries between Stockholm and Turku will operate using only liquified biogas resulting in a 90 percent reduction in harmful greenhouse gas emissions. This first demonstration of a green corridor will take place from August 29th until September 4th to celebrate Baltic Sea Day (August 26th). LBG made in Europe entirely of food and agricultural waste will be used by the two test vessels. The vessels will make an 11-hour trip between the two destinations or offer passengers the option of a 24-hour cruise.

Massachusetts plans to expand its wind port capacities

Massachusetts’ governor and officials (USA) support the wind energy sector. A deal was signed in February 2024 between the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), the City of Salem and Crowley Wind Service to transform a former oil- and coal-fired power plant into the Salem Wind Terminal. Once built, the terminal should create 60 to 150 jobs in addition to the 150 jobs during construction. Meanwhile, MassCEC announced its plan to expand the state’s first wind port facilities in New Bedford to anticipate the increasing in the port facilities’ demand.

Cruises in Amsterdam: Limitations start in 2026, relocation in 2035

The city council of the Dutch capital has announced an agreement to gradually reduce cruise activities, heading towards their complete relocation outside the city center, where the current Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is located. From 2026 onwards a maximum of 100 cruise calls per year will be allowed to moor in the PTA. Another requirement will be the mandatory use of shore power starting in 2027 to reduce the polluting emissions from the ships. These decisions are part of a broader strategy to reduce the negative impact of the tourism sector, to achieve a “sustainable visitor economy”. These decisions result from an in-depth analysis, considering all effects, both positive and negative, of the cruise activities. The authorities expect the port of Rotterdam to absorb an additional 40 cruise calls that will no longer dock in Amsterdam. At the same time, a new feasibility study will be launched to assess the different relocation scenarios by 2035.

AIVP Webinar – Towards the Lisbon declaration: addressing global challenges in Port cities

Port Cities are at the forefront of global pressing issues, such as the rising sea levels, the decarbonization of maritime transport and urban areas, and the protection of the oceans. The UN Ocean Conference, which will take place in 2025 in Nice, or the yearly COPs from the UNFCCC are key moments to accelerate policies and foster cooperation. Port City actors are expanding their roles to answer these challenges. How are they promoting innovative solutions in the port city territories? And what are their expectations for these global events led by the UN? What are the demands?

Entries announced for the AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize

The deadline for entering the inaugural AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize officially passed on 21 July 2024. More than 20 projects were submitted, representing many different port cities all over the world. The impressive level of participation reflects the strong interest shown by local and port authorities in this initiative, aimed at promoting the most outstanding approaches to port-city interface development. The Expert Panel has already begun the task of assessing the entries, and will whittle them down to a final shortlist. A Grand Jury will then convene on 10 and 11 October 2024 in Le Havre, where AIVP’s headquarters are based, to judge the finalists. The winning entry will be officially announced on 27 November in Lisbon, at a ceremony held during the AIVP World Conference.
