Fresh produce delivered by boat via the Brussels canal
The S+T+Arts art project developed by GLUON in collaboration with local farmers’ groups made its first delivery by boat to central Brussels (Belgium) last week. Fruit and vegetables from 12 farms in Pajjotenland were delivered to the heart of the capital by a specially built boat, before covering the last kilometre of the journey on cargo bikes under a partnership with two local organisations. The EU-funded art project aims to explore the organisational and financial feasibility of this original logistics chain. It was launched during the “I Love Science” festival organised by Innoviris in Brussels, focusing on the issue of local food supply chains.

New facilities will strengthen the Blue Economy Sector in Barcelona
After the America’s Cup currently taking place in Barcelona (Spain) the port city will receive 142 million € investment on three new facilities on the waterfront to further develop the Blue Economy. These new spaces will be operational between 2027 and 2028 and will foster research, training, innovation, and entrepreneurship linked to the sea. The first one will be the Barcelona Maritime Technology Park, a center for research in maritime and nautical engineering. The second will be the Blue Tech Port, an innovation hub to host maritime technology companies, developed by the Port of Barcelona. The third facility will be the Barcelona Sea of Science, a space open to the public to learn about the ocean, promoting citizen participation in marine science. These investments result from the strong cooperation between the port and the city in the development of the blue economy.

“Pier 22”: a bold new look for Danube Island
“Pier 22” is architectural firm Mostlikely’s plan to transform Vienna’s Donauinsel, otherwise known as Danube Island (Austria). In 2023, an attractive new 18,000 m² public space was created, specifically designed to be inclusive and multi-purpose. It features a waterfront promenade with a bathing area and online workspace, while there are also plans to create a “cultural kiosk”. The latest phase of development began in September 2024, and aims to create new landscaped green spaces, sports infrastructures, and other services to complete the original programme.Â

Environmental protection measures implemented by Port of Guadeloupe
The Port of Guadeloupe (France) is currently working on an extension of Quay 12 to be able to welcome new generation ships. To decrease their environmental impacts, the port authority has implemented 43 “ERCS” (Avoid, Reduce, Compensate, Monitor) measures since the start of the project. Compensation measures include the restoration of mangroves, the implementation of a program of anticollision and surveillance for cetaceans, and the creation of nesting places for native birds. The monitoring is focused on noise (under-water and on the construction site) and waste reduction. The project and environmental measures are estimated to cost €135 million and will be completed at the end of 2026.

Energy transition and circular economy
Innovative energy transition solutions from ports around the world
The Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Zero Emission Services have successfully tested a pilot for moveable shore power for sea-going vessels. Innovations and results have largely been seen in the offshore wind sector. In Japan, an earthquake-resistant offshore wind foundation design has been unveiled by the University of Tokyo and J-Power. The Port of Marseilles-Fos (France) is holding public consultations between October 14th and 23rd of December for its project DEOS, which would develop a platform for the construction and assemblage of floating offshore windmills in the port’s industrial zone. In New York (USA), the first American commercial-scale offshore wind farm has produced enough power for 70,000 homes annually.

New strategic plan for the Port of Philadelphia
The Port of Philadelphia (USA) has unveiled a new 15-year plan dubbed “PhilaPort Strategic Plan: Destination 2040”, aimed at improving its container handling capacity while diversifying and developing the local economy. The seaport’s project, which includes a strategy for using both inland waterways and land, is expected to generate nearly 9,000 direct jobs and $170 million in annual revenue by 2040. The Packer Avenue terminal, already well-known for its refrigeration capacity, is set to triple the volume of containers it is capable of handling to three million. Initiatives are also being considered for cruise ships and renewables (LNG, hydrogen).
