Port of Saguenay publishes a guide on coexistence in its industrial zone
The Saguenay (Canada) industrial port-zone, which was designated as such in 2016 by the Quebec Government, provides full intermodal market access and is situated on 12 km2 of available land. The successful implementation of an industrial project depends largely on a good understanding of the dynamics and characteristics of the host environment. Therefore, the Port of Saguenay developed the “Reference Guide for harmonious coexistence and sustainable development of the Saguenay industrial port-zone”, produced in partnership with Promotion Saguenay and First Nations. The tool bases its recommendations on analyses of issues identified with local partners and proceeds to identify priorities, expectations and realities for future project initiators. The main concerns addressed include community consultation and involvement, climate action, sustainable mobility, and circular economy.

Port of Leith transformation: regenerating and redeveloping an innovative urban hub
The port of Leith (Scotland) is set for a major transformation with plans to redevelop the dry dock at Harbour 31, part of a wider regeneration plan for the area. Forth Ports is aiming to create a dynamic new hub for businesses and the creative arts, while opening up previously inaccessible areas of the port to the community. Existing historic buildings will be incorporated into the project to preserve the local heritage. The development is part of a €58.5 million investment that also aims to support the Inch Cape offshore wind farm, expected to generate enough energy to power half of Scotland’s homes by 2027.

Belfast Harbour 2025-2029: strategic modernisation and key investments
Belfast Harbour (Northern Ireland) has adopted a 2025-2029 development strategy that includes a $386 million investment to attract new traffic in two key sectors: cruise tourism and offshore wind. The plan includes the construction of a $110 million deepwater quay that will be able to accommodate larger cruise ships while also expanding the port’s offshore wind turbine assembly capacity. Almost $257 million will be directed towards port infrastructure improvements, with $145 million set to be spent on modernising and maintaining the existing facilities. The port authority also plans to regenerate and redevelop the Harbour Estate and waterfront. This ambitious vision will cement the economic role played by the port, which already handles 70% of Northern Ireland’s seaborne trade and 25% of seaborne trade for the whole country.

Consultation under way on future plans for Fremantle’s port precinct
As part of a plan to relocate container traffic from the port of Fremantle to the new Westport terminal in Kwinana (Australia), the State’s Labor Government has put forward a strategic vision for the city of Fremantle. A local consultation is being held to gauge the views of the various interest groups and local population about what the city’s future should look like. The plan to move container port services is a 172M$ commitment by the government and is expected to be completed by the late 2030s. It will free up some 260 hectares of land, similar to the scale of projects such as HafenCity in Hamburg or London’s Canary Wharf. Some figures have already been revealed, including the creation of up to 45,000 new jobs and more than 20,000 new homes. The project aims to embody Fremantle’s identity as a resilient, adaptable, hardworking and welcoming city with a 50-year redevelopment horizon.
