Energy transition and circular economy
Port of Venice takes a major step towards net-zero with biofuels
The PSA Venice-Vecon (Italy) container terminal announced the implementation of a pioneering sustainability strategy with the adoption of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and the use of 100% renewable energy – a transformation that not only reduces environmental impact but also sets a new standard for the port sector. The transition to HVO required no changes to port equipment and demonstrates a real commitment to a circular economy and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. The terminal has also activated the supply of 100% green energy from renewable wind power, with the issuance of GO certificates, which means that there is a 100 percent reduction in CO2 emissions from energy consumption since February 1st.

The maritime sector highlights the role of women in ports
Assoporti has launched its Guidelines for Inclusive Communication for the Italian Port System Authorities to ensure that all forms of communication are respectful and inclusive. It especially aims to enhance the role of women in the port sector, reducing gender inequalities. Recognising the importance of gender balance in the maritime and port sector, ESPO has announced the topic of this year’s edition of its Award: “Women in Ports”. It aims to highlight and reward ports that have developed innovative policies and/or strategies that successfully attract more women to work in ports. The project submission deadline is 4 July 2025. The international maritime charity Sailors’ Society has set up a dedicated helpline, allowing female cadets and seafarers to speak in confidence to a female member of the Sailors’ Society team.

Energy transition and circular economy
The city of Oslo gets a new multimodal charging station
The ground-breaking fast charging station at the Revierkaia dock in central Oslo (Norway) is capable of delivering power to boats, buses, and trucks. With ten 400 kW chargers, it will be used to power up cargo vessels owned by the shipping line Hurtigruten at three-week intervals. The rest of the time, it will recharge heavy goods vehicles. In addition, its strategic location makes it a popular solution for local tourist buses, some 68% of which were electric in 2024. The smart set-up optimizes the way energy is used while supporting the green transition in the shipping industry. The project is part of the Norwegian capital’s plan to cut its CO₂ emissions by 95% by 2030.

Rouen: a new alliance aims to combat plastic waste in the Seine estuary
HAROPA Port (France) is partnering with the LitterBANK project created by public interest group GIP Seine-Aval to tackle the issue of plastic waste in the Seine estuary. The initiative aims to identify the factors that cause mesoplastics (measuring between 5 and 25 mm) to accumulate, analyse the way they are dispersed, and trial pioneering cleanup technologies such as “marine vacuum cleaners”. From 10 to 12 March 2025, field operations will take place in Tancarville, Aizier, Petiville, and Hénouville. The partnership, which also involves La Maison de l’Estuaire and the Seine-Maritime Department, is part of a collective drive to protect the environment and promote collaboration between local stakeholders and the scientific community.
