Redevelopment projects underway at San Diego’s waterfront
The Port Authority of San Diego (USA) is planning several projects to improve its waterfront. The port has decided to invest in a long-term, nature-based solution to address the chronic erosion at the Grand Caribe Shoreline Park. The park is located near the Coronado Cays neighborhood on an artificial peninsula and provides recreational public access to the coastline. The port will organize a public workshop to receive feedback from concerned parties. The port is also undergoing an environmental review of its Coronado Yacht House Redevelopment Proposal, which includes a new clubhouse, a youth sailing school center, and event spaces for local community activities. Public access will be improved by installing a large promenade and a viewing platform along the bayfront shoreline.

First look at the new Cité des Imaginaires in Nantes
A new imagination-themed cultural hub is due to open on the banks of the River Loire in Nantes (France) in 2028. Designed to inspire discussion and debate about important contemporary issues and what the future should look like, the “Cité des Imaginaires” will occupy a historic port building known as Cap 44, itself a major feature of Nantes’ maritime and economic heritage. The building, originally constructed using an at-the-time innovative material known as “Hennebique” reinforced concrete, will undergo a complete renovation in preparation for its new purpose. Two design teams are working on the project: Dutch firm Neutelings Riedijk Architects and Nantes-based ARS Architectes. The reinforced concrete structure will be stripped to make it more visible, with round windows overlooking the river and the “Jardin Extraordinaire” park, where the new cultural centre will occupy a place of pride. The Loire quays will also be depaved to provide more pleasant surroundings for pedestrians and cyclists and bring nature back to the site.

New C40 publications on shipping decarbonization and green jobs
AIVP’s partner organization, C40, has recently launched two relevant publications for port cities worldwide. The first one, entitled “Navigating change: How ports and cities can collaborate on climate action”, highlights the diverse climate actions undertaken by ports and cities around the world, explores the factors shaping port-city collaboration, identifies opportunities for joint action, and provides strategies to strengthen partnerships. The second, “Shaping the future maritime workforce: Green jobs in ports and cities”, offers the first-ever mapping of the green jobs landscape in ports and shipping, as trends in workforce growth and policies that ensure social dialogue and community engagement.

Vigo showcases maritime culture with a restoration projectÂ
The port of Vigo (Spain) has invited bids for a contract to restore a former warehouse on the fishing port quay as part of plans to promote the local fishing industry and its traditional trades. Repairing nets and boat equipment is a skilled job that has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations. A budget of €760,816 has been earmarked to renovate a 500 m2 space, with 70% of the total investment coming from EU funding. The new facilities will include a museum, along with a training centre for the next generation. The initiative comes as the Port of Vigo was awarded a Blue Flag by the Association for Environmental Education (ADEAC) in March 2025.

Mangrove initiative to promote biodiversity
On the 21st of April, GPMG, the operator of the biggest port in Guadeloupe (France), teamed up with the local employers’ federation UDE-MEDEF to organise a mangrove planting operation in Jarry, with numerous partners and officials in attendance. The scheme fits in with the port’s long-term environmental conservation policy aimed at making coastal areas more resilient to climate challenges. Mangroves are an effective way to stabilise soils and protect against erosion while providing a habitat for local wildlife. The project is part of a wider effort to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable economic growth through flagship programmes, including Life Adapt’Island and Cayoli.

Port sustainability agreements highlighted at SMW 2025
The Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) took place from March 24 to 28, organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The event showcased MPA’s commitment to sustainable port operations through key agreements with global stakeholders. These included a green and digital shipping corridor with the Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands), an MoU with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium), a research project on maritime emission reduction with Australia, and a letter of intent with India on maritime digitalization and decarbonization. Additionally, MPA introduced a digital twin of the Port of Singapore and launched drone trials for chemical spill detection.
