Revitalization of Mataram’s Ampenan historic fishing port

The construction of the revitalized public space around the defunct fishing port at the capital of the island of Lombok (Indonesia) started in 2024. The park was inaugurated in April 2025 and is intended to improve the city and its old fishing port neighborhood. The renovation includes an open-air amphitheater for traditional art spectacles, a promenade along the waterfront, and a public park. The future maintenance of this public space will be operated by the community organization POKDARWIS, which specializes in preserving tourist attractions.

Windcoop launches construction of its first sail-powered container ship

Lorient-based cooperative Windcoop (France) has completed a construction order with Turkish company RMK Marine to build its new sail-powered container ship, designed to be an exemplary, futureproof shipping solution, financed by a pioneering cooperative model for a vessel of this size. The ship will be 91.3 meters long (around 300 feet) with capacity for up to 210 TEUs and 40 reefer plugs. The cooperative involved private citizens, committed shippers, and institutional investors and banks. The vessel will cost a total of €28.5 million ($31.5 million) and is expected to enter service in May 2027. Windcoop is keen to take the project further and is already looking to secure financing for a second ship. The French cooperative is not the only organization investing in low-carbon containerships, with Spanish group Bound4blue working to convert existing vessels by installing suction sails.

Port Castelló’s cinemas to house new digital technology hub

The Regional Government and the Port Authority of Castelló (Spain) have signed a collaboration agreement to redevelop the former cinemas in the Puerto Azahar complex into a new digital technology hub. In this area of 6,155 m2, the Regional Ministry will establish a space for training, research, ‘living labs’ and demonstrations of digital content and technologies as part of its innovation strategy. Over the next 30 years, the aim is to facilitate access to test beds and provide advice on the development of applications in areas such as AI, blockchain, etc. This will be complemented by spaces for businesses and training in digital skills, aimed at facilitating the employability and retention in the labor market of people living in the province.

Venice celebrates its port

Venetians once again demonstrated their enduring affection for their port recently, as more than 13,000 people visited the ports of Venice and Chioggia (Italy) over a single weekend. The local municipal and port authorities have been working together for some years now, to organize various activities at the Santa Marta and San Basilio waterfronts, and on 5 and 6 April, over 5,000 runners took part in the 9th night-time trail run at the docks, while some 8,000 people attended an event dubbed Su e Zo per i Ponti (“Over and Under the Bridges”). The weekend was also a chance for visitors to get a glimpse of the Adriatic ports’ mascot, Faro De Faris, a symbol of the port’s positive contribution to the city and the lives of its residents.

Housing in the industrial area causes tension rise in Seattle

The Port of Seattle (USA) has filed a legal appeal challenging the Seattle City Council’s ordinance permitting residential development in the city’s industrial core. The Port contends that the ordinance constitutes an unlawful spot rezone favoring a single property owner and bypasses standard land use and environmental review processes. Port officials argue that introducing housing into the industrial area threatens maritime operations, which support over 46,000 jobs and contribute $16.3 billion in economic activity. The appeal seeks to block the ordinance’s implementation, citing violations of state land use policies.
