Dublin Port strengthen port–city connections with the new cultural program
The Port of Dublin (Ireland) has launched its 2026 Cultural Events Programme, featuring more than 100 events between April and October aimed at opening the port to citizens. The initiative includes guided bus tours, new boat visits, exhibitions, lectures and performances across port sites. New features such as a self-guided trail along the Great South Wall and public art installations at Poolbeg Lighthouse expand access to waterfront spaces. Events take place in areas like the Substation and the Greenway, reinforcing the port’s role as a cultural and urban asset. The program illustrates how working ports can enhance transparency, public access and shared identity by integrating heritage, culture and mobility into port–city strategies.

The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) Ports and Terminal Multiservices Limited Chapter of the Nigeria Customs Service hosted an environmental awareness campaign to highlight the importance of sustainability within the Lagos Port Command. The workshop, themed “Green Barracks, Green Borders: Advancing Environmental Stewardship for a Carbon-Responsible Future,” focused on promoting climate awareness through hands-on education in effective waste management and tree planting. COWA is dedicated to a national initiative aimed at planting 50,000 trees to combat desertification and erosion, contributing to a greener and healthier environment.Â

An atlas of port business parks in Lorient
At the request of the Brittany Region, the urban planning agency of Lorient Agglomération (France) published an atlas of port business areas in December 2025. As the region owns 21 ports within its territory, it is seeking to gain a better understanding of land use and the sectors of activity present, in order to assess trends in employment and economic activity within the port area. This atlas has just been supplemented by a report on the potential for optimising economic land use. This should inform the region’s strategy regarding its port activities in order to further specialise these areas. Currently, 77% of the land studied is used for port and maritime activities; in other words, there is scope for growth to increase port activities in the area.

The Port of Santander is undergoing a transformation to boost the blue economy
On April 10th, the board of directors of the Port of Santander (Spain) approved the project to develop the Marina del Cantabrico into a strategic hub for water sports, intended as a key driver of the blue economy in the region. This represents an investment of over €40 million to transform more than 170,000 m² of water space and 53,000 m² of port land. Three new concessions will be created. These concern the extension of the marina; a new water sports and recreational facility in the western part of the basin; and a new infrastructure dedicated to boat careening, repair, construction and dry docking. The port has also approved a partnership with the City of Santander for the development of a street on the port land. This project stems from the Permanent City-Port Forum, a platform for dialogue comprising port and local authorities.

Esbjerg Port innovates in the reuse of dredged materials
The Port of Esbjerg (Denmark), in collaboration with ECOncrete, is using dredged sediments for next-generation port infrastructure. The sediments collected in this way are incorporated into the manufacture of “Coastalock” concrete blocks. These blocks promote marine biodiversity through the addition of specific additives to the concrete, optimising conditions for marine life to settle and grow. The first Coastalock units were recently installed at the Nordsøka site. Several hundred units will be deployed in the future to become an integral part of the port’s infrastructure.

Risk management: Lisbon tests its tsunami warning system
On March 25, 2026, the municipality of Lisbon (Portugal), in collaboration with civil protection authorities, conducted the “LisbonWave2026” exercise in the riverside area of the Portuguese capital. Between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., four alarm sirens sounded in exposed areas, including Praça do Império and Doca de Alcântara, accompanied by voice messages in Portuguese and English urging the population to move to safety. This exercise aims to prepare residents and tourists for the seismic and tsunami risks threatening Lisbon, whose history has already been deeply marked by such disasters. By 2029, the network is expected to expand to ten sirens to cover the entire waterfront.
