Sports events are shaping port-city waterfronts
In San Pedro (USA), the Port of Los Angeles’ West Harbor, spanning 42 acres, will open for the World Cup. The $500 million attraction is one of the Fan Zones and will feature a 6,200-seat amphitheatre, a 175-foot Ferris wheel, and restaurants. In Stabia Port (Italy), part of the Port System Authority of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea, is preparing for the America’s Cup regattas to be held in Naples in 2027. The project to recover the public areas of the ancient port of Castellammare di Stabia was launched in January, leading to quay improvements. Starting this tourist season, all yachts will be able to use onshore power supply and the port will sensitise provision providers to use less plastic.

€212 million to transform Spanish ports into offshore wind hubs
The Spanish Port-Eolmar programme, led by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), allocates €212 million to five Spanish ports in preparation for the deployment of offshore wind energy. The A Coruña/Ferrol-San Cibrao grouping is the main beneficiary with €100 million for the Golfo Ártabro-Offshore Wind project, followed by Castellón with €50.8 million for the extension of its southern quay, designed to accommodate the manufacturing and assembly of floating platforms. Las Palmas receives €30 million, Tarragona €24 million, and Gijón over €7 million for the rehabilitation of its quay. In return, each beneficiary port must commit to a private industrial project of equivalent value to the aid received, for a minimum period of ten years.

Scotland presents a five-year plan to integrate circular economy principles into energy infrastructure
Zero Waste Scotland unveiled a five-year roadmap at the All-Energy Conference in Glasgow on 13 May to boost circularity across energy infrastructure and port operations. The roadmap is the first of four planned by Zero Waste Scotland under the Scottish Government’s Circular Economy Strategy. Published in March 2026, the strategy outlines nine key interventions spanning governance, evidence, policy integration, physical infrastructure, digital systems, regulation, workforce development, finance, and communications. The five-year roadmap is designed to keep materials from decommissioned energy assets circulating within the Scottish economy and promote the creation of reuse hubs. The roadmap’s Missions Board includes representatives from the British Ports Association, the British Standards Institution, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Skills Development Scotland, and Transition Finance Scotland.

Incheon: inner port piers to become waterfront park by 2029
After 19 years of debate, South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has finalized and announced the revised redevelopment plan for Piers 1 and 8 of Incheon’s inner port. The site, kept off-limits for decades behind barbed wire and concrete walls, will be transformed into a waterfront park combining seaside promenades, terraces, and cultural facilities. The project, jointly led by the city of Incheon, the Port Authority, and the Incheon Urban Corporation, covers 436,694 m² with a total budget of 637.1 billion won, of which 28.3 billion won comes from national public funding. Construction is set to begin in the second half of 2026, with completion targeted for 2029, aiming to make this area the heart of Incheon’s maritime tourism and a key driver of old downtown regeneration.

The ports of Valencia and Long Beach launch a sustainability partnership
The Spanish port and its American counterpart are both aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. To reach this goal, the two entities have committed to developing green corridors, as well as strengthening knowledge and technology exchange. The United States is indeed one of Valenciaport’s priority markets: with a total of 5,732,681 tonnes of goods and 391,977 TEUs traded with the U.S. market, this connection represents a vital share of the Valencian port’s international activity.

The Port of Cork unveils its strategic plan for 2026–2030
In Cork (Ireland), the port’s strategy is built around four pillars: infrastructure development, strengthening human capital, business support, and sustainability. Through this roadmap, the port is committed to playing a key role in Ireland’s path to carbon neutrality by developing the country’s first port infrastructure specifically designed to support offshore renewable energy. Handling around 17% of Ireland’s total freight tonnage, the Port of Cork is also a major driver of regional development.
