Twenty women, most of them mothers, underwent intensive training to obtain their A5 licence, enabling them to drive heavy goods vehicles. The initiative is part of the port’s long term strategy to build links with the local community. After gaining their licence, the women are able to access sought-after specialist jobs in the construction industry.

Two green corridor initiatives secure direct support from national governments

State backing is key to the development of the energy infrastructures needed for the green corridors promised since the Clydebank Declaration in 2021. The Canadian federal government has earmarked 165.5 million US dollars in funding to support green projects in the fields of port infrastructure and marine propulsion systems. Inland waterways are included, with projects on the Saint Lawrence river and the Great Lakes. The governments of Singapore and Japan have signed an agreement to cooperate on alternative fuels, with a focus on bunkering, security and training. Cybersecurity and digitisation are also on the agenda.

The ports of Flanders cooperate on fuel pipelines

Green hydrogen, ammonia and methanol are central to the development projects led by the Flemish port authorities. But transport and storage infrastructures are needed first. That’s why the three biggest ports in Flanders are now part of the Pipelink group, which is responsible for 750 km of pipelines in the province. North Sea Port, which operates the port of Ghent, recently took a stake in the group. The next phase in this “land to land” cooperation initiative will involve the development of CO2 pipelines.

New public space in Hong Kong’s waterfront

The new space is located on Cheung Sha Wan promenade, part of the refurbished waterfront of the west side of the Kowloon peninsula in Hong Kong (China), between new residential and commercial developments and the industrial wholesale food market. The project is inspired by the area’s history of bustling boat activity, with the canopy mirroring the layout of docked boats, creating a shifting, segmented roof structure. The main design allows for diverse spaces beneath, at the same time providing shade, protection from the rain, while also fostering natural cooling playing area during the day. The new public space is part of a larger waterfront landscape. The pier and promenade are connected back to the city fabric through three main routes including links to the subway station, neighbouring hotel, and new residential complex.
