Long Beach trials pioneering “Tri-Gen” solution for water, electricity, and hydrogen
Electrolysis is a chemical process that uses electricity to make hydrogen, with water as a byproduct. A firm called FuelCell Energy has designed a revolutionary system dubbed Tri-gen, which uses biogas as a fuel to produce hydrogen from clean renewable electricity. The water is collected and can be repurposed for washing vehicles, for example, while the surplus power generated is made available to the manufacturing industry. The Tri-gen system is being deployed in Long Beach (USA), where it will be used by the Toyota Motor North America plant and the port authority itself (for its light handling operations).

A former grain silo repurposed as an art gallery in Kristiansand
A 1930s grain silo on the Odderøya peninsula (Norway) has been turned into an art gallery. Named “Kunstsilo”, the waterfront building houses the largest private collection of modern art by Scandinavian artists. The project was designed by a trio of firms, Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, BAX, and Mendoza Partida, who created a basilica-style space. New openings and cut-outs were created at the top and sides of the building, letting in light and showcasing the full character of the vast concrete structure. The openings and the rooftop command sweeping views of the surrounding area, including other cultural venues.

Port of Barcelona restores the historic ‘warehouses’ of the East Quay
The Port of Barcelona (Spain) has completed the restoration of the four historic sheds of the East dock, preserving the original aesthetics from the early 20th century. The rehabilitated buildings will host gatherings and cultural events. The work, at a cost of €7.3 million, has been completed in time for the start of the America’s Cup. During this event, three of them will serve as a meeting point for the Port Community and the last will be the maritime station of the new nautical bus. The sheds will be managed and marketed by the Port Vell urban management under the TINGLADOS brand, with the aim of attracting high-value cultural activity in the port, reinforcing Port Vell’s vocation to become a cultural space for the citizens of Barcelona.

New port-city deal in Brooklyn heralds major investment
New York City and the Port Authority of New York (USA) have sealed an ambitious agreement to swap two large tracts of land. A 40 hectare site owned by the Port in Red Hook, Brooklyn, will be handed over to the City and the NYEDC, in exchange for 91 hectares of municipal land near the port of Howland Hook on Staten Island. The port of Red Hook is currently in decline, with ageing infrastructures in poor condition. The city plans to scale up its port activities, particularly in the area of urban logistics. It also aims to develop new housing and public spaces, as part of an inclusive approach designed to engage with local residents. The Mayor of New York has announced $80 million in funding, with a further $15 million to be provided by New York State.

Dialogue: San Antonio and others show its importance for port city development
The Port and the City Coordination Council of San Antonio (Chile) have invited the public to a Citizens’ Dialogue day to jointly develop a roadmap for the Agreement for a Sustainable San Antonio. 140 people, belonging to 38 local community organisations, gathered to analyse issues and actions to promote a harmonious port-city-environment development. The San Antonio authorities agree that it is important to consider citizens’ feedback and vision as it will improve their quality of life. In New York (USA), the South Bronx community came together for a “Waterfront Community Envisioning” session for the Mott Haven-Port Morris multi-use waterfront, which spans from the Harlem River to the East River. The Port of QuequĂ©n (Argentina) also engaged port city stakeholders in a discussion to improve the conditions for the region’s productive development, diversify export cargoes and increase public-private partnerships.
