The Dutch government invests in sustainable river transportation
The company “Zero Emission Services (ZES)” is set to receive €50 million from Nationaal Groeifonds, an initiative by the Dutch Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Change. The investment will be used to develop 75 battery containers for maritime application (ZESpacks), 14 docking stations, and electric inland vessels. If the Netherlands adopt zero emissions-only river vessels by 2050, the country should save some 6.6 Mt of CO2 and up to 17,500 t of NOx. A zero emissions river boat has already been sailing in the Netherlands since September 2021. ZES is a member of the European MAGPIE consortium, which aims to decarbonise shipping in, to, and from ports.

17th World Conference of the AIVP
Thanks to the total of 350 participants who assisted to the 17th World Conference of the AIVP, which took place in Tangier, Morocco and was centered around the theme “Inspiring Blue Futures”. We also thank our partners – SAPT and Marina – and the official sponsors – SMIT – Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development, Tanger Med Port Authority, Agence Nationale des Ports (ANP), Agence pour la Promotion et le dĂ©veloppement du Nord, and Centre RĂ©gional d’Investissement de la RĂ©gion de Tanger – TĂ©touan – Al Hoceima.Â
Through the concept of “Inspiring Blue Futures”, the AIVP intended to underline the role of primary importance that port cities have to play in this mission and on crucial issues for the future of our societies, our economy and our environment. At this conference, we saw that Blue Futures are made up of innovative solutions for the decarbonization of supply chains and port cities, and that we must focus on alternative fuels and the electrification of infrastructures, marine renewable energies, digitalization or even carbon capture in the marine environment (the best carbon sinks are wetlands and the sea bed). We also ascertained that new approaches need to be developed in natural habitat restoration, sustainable coastal tourism or food systems, including aquaculture and sustainable fishing.
